Ben Gibbard Curates Yoko Ono Tribute Album Featuring David Byrne, Sharon Van Etten, Japanese Breakfast, and More

Canvasback Music/Atlantic Records have announced a new album celebrating the work of Yoko Ono. Imagined and curated by Death Cab for Cutie’s Benjamin Gibbard, Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono is set to arrive on February 18 and features 14 new versions of Ono’s tracks performed by a range of artists including Sharon Van Etten, Death Cab for Cutie, Deerhoof, US Girls, Japanese Breakfast, Jay Som, Stephin Merritt (of Magnetic Fields), Thao, Sudan Archives, We Are KING, and Amber Coffman. Listen to David Byrne and Yo La Tengo’s newly unveiled collaborative cover of ‘Who Has Seen The Wind?’ below, and scroll down for the full tracklist and cover artwork.

In a press release, Gibbard explained that the compilation “was born out of both love and frustration. The ‘love’ part is pretty obvious; It is the seemingly bottomless well of inspiration and enjoyment Yoko Ono’s music has provided me and I must assume everyone else present here on this compilation. The ‘frustration’ part, on the other hand, goes back decades.”

He continued:

As an advocate, the tallest hurdle to clear has always been the public’s ignorance as to the breadth of Yoko’s work. To put it into context; This is an artist whose output has run the gamut from avant-garde to bubblegum pop, often across a single album. For years, it has been my position that her songwriting has been criminally overlooked. She has consistently created melodies as memorable as those of best pop writers. As a lyricist, she has always written with poignance, sophistication and deep introspection.

Some of her best songs have been covered and compiled here by a generation-spanning group of musicians for whom her work has meant so much. It is my sincere hope that a new crop of Yoko Ono fans fall in love with her songwriting due in some small part to this album we have put together.

A portion of the proceeds from Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono will be donated to WhyHunger, a non-profit organization Ono has supported for decades that aims to transform our food system by building social justice and striking at the root causes of hunger and poverty.

The album will be accompanied by a podcast hosted by Gibbard and music journalist Jenny Eliscu, featuring in-depth discussions of Ono’s music and legacy. You can find a trailer for it below.

Elanor Moss Announces ‘Citrus’ EP, Unveils Debut Single ‘Soundings’

0

York songwriter Elanor Moss has announced her debut EP Citrus, previewing it with the new single ‘Soundings’. The five-track EP was co-produced with Brooklyn producer Oli Deakin (CMAT, Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Ed Nash). Listen to ‘Soundings’ below.

“‘Soundings’ is essentially about relying on substance abuse to drown out depression and trauma, how easy it is to slip into that,” Moss explained in a statement. “Contrary to the dark narrative, I wanted there to be a catharsis and playfulness to the melodies and delivery, and a melodrama too. I wanted to capture that feeling of total self-indulgence that can come with wanting to escape in your low moments. There’s a self-awareness in the narrator’s need to disappear into a haze; you know it’s unhealthy but you do it anyway.”

Elanor Moss is set to head out on tour with Benjamin Francis Leftwich throughout February and March 2022.

Sea Power have shared a new single called ‘Green Goddess’. It’s the latest preview of the band’s forthcoming album Everything Was Forever, following previous entries ‘Two Fingers’, ‘Folly’, and ‘Lakeland Echo’. Give it a listen below.

“’Green Goddess’ was written with [guitarist] Noble,” vocalist and guitarist Jan Scott Wilkinson explained in a press release. “He had the initial idea for the music which I helped arrange and add vocals to. It is a love song about everything green from the Lake District to the New Forest. The places I love to be which are quiet and restorative. It is also a love song for my wife whose favourite colour is green. A rumination on human and non-human muses. There are dark and complicated things going on but sometimes it is good to forget this and go to the places and where you are happy. A hope that the future doesn’t have to be at odds with the past.”

Everything Was Forever is due for release on February 18.

Widowspeak Announce New Album ‘The Jacket’, Share New Single

Widowspeak have announced their sixth studio album. The follow-up to 2020’s Plum is called The Jacket and it comes out March 11 via Captured Tracks. The duo of singer-songwriter Molly Hamilton and guitarist Robert Earl Thomas have today previewed the LP with the lead single ‘Everything Is Simple’, which arrives with an accompanying video by OTIUM. Check it out below and scroll down for the album cover and tracklist.

Widowspeak said of the new track in a statement:

At the beginning of something (a relationship, a project, a job, a new place) you have this very pure feeling toward it. Everything feels less complicated because you’re oriented wholly toward that potential. It’s undefined, and that makes it easier to understand, because you can’t see the problems yet. As time goes on, you learn more, you experience more, and you see where the limitations exist: not even necessarily ones imposed upon you, but where you draw your own lines. Maybe you can’t see what was holding you back until it’s in the past, and by then others’ perspectives contradict your own. Everyone is constructing their own versions of reality. The song was originally going to feed into the drama of the imaginary band, but it’s about our own band too. I was thinking about how I’m an inherently unreliable narrator about my own life, and at the same time maybe there are no “true” stories.

According to OTIUM, the concept of the music video is “centered around the idea of trying, knowing that even if things turn out differently than you intend, the very act itself is what you are striving to achieve.”
