Fontaines D.C. Announce New Album ‘Romance’, Share Video for New Single ‘Starburster’

Fontaines D.C. have announced their fourth album, Romance, which is slated for release on August 23 via XL Recordings. The follow-up to 2022’s Skinty Fia was made with producer James Ford. Lead single ‘Starbuster’ arrives today with a music video directed by Aube Perrie. Check it out below, and scroll down for the album cover and tracklist.

“We’ve always had this sense of idealism and romance,” guitarist Conor Deegan shared in a statement. “Each album gets further away from observing that through the lens of Ireland, as directly as (Mercury Prize-nominated debut) Dogrel. The second album (the GRAMMY-nominated A Hero’s Death) is about that detachment, and the third (Skinty Fia) is about Irishness dislocated in the diaspora. Now we look to where and what else there is to be romantic about.”

Drawing a line between the album’s themes and Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s anime Akira, singer Grian Chatten elaborated: “I’m fascinated by that – falling in love at the end of the world. The album is about protecting that tiny flame. The bigger Armageddon looms, the more precious it becomes. This record is about deciding what’s fantasy – the tangible world, or where you go in your mind. What represents reality more? That feels almost spiritual for us.”

“We say things on this record we’ve wanted to say for a long time,” Chatten added. “I never feel like it’s over, but it’s nice to feel lighter.”

The Folk Implosion Announce First New Album in 25 Years

The Folk Implosion – the duo of Lou Barlow and John Davis – have announced their first album in over two decades. Walk Thru Me is set for release on June 28 via Joyful Noise, and it’s led by the closing track, ‘Moonlit Kind’. Check it out and find the album cover and tracklist below.

Barlow and Davis worked on the album remotely, with help from producer Scott Solter. “Because we’re so separate, part of this album is me desperately trying to telepathically communicate to John and Scott, who are 700 miles away from me,” Barlow explained in a statement. “A big part of what I consider to be the Folk Implosion is taking disparate things and turning them into pop.”

Walk Thru Me follows the Folk Implosion’s 2003 album The New Folk Implosion, which Barlow recorded without Davis; their last LP together was 1999’s One Part Lullaby. In 2022, they released the Feel It If You Feel It EP.

wonderful Folkways anthology
Folk Visions & Voices: Traditional Music and Song in Northern
Georgia.”

“‘I’m All Fucked Up’ is just me trying to diagnose/comfort/scold my younger self – an amalgamation of real experiences I had jumbled and reset in inaccurate but contextually relevant locations,” Amos explained in a press release.

Box for Buddy, Box for Star arrives on June 14 via Double Double Whammy.

Hana Vu Shares New Single ’22’

Hana Vu has unveiled an new single, ’22’, off her upcoming album Romanticism. It follows previous offerings ‘Care’ and ‘Hammer’. Check it out below.

“Being young, there’s so much that I experience for the first time, all the time,” Vu explained in a statement. “But as I experience more things, I become more desensitized to those things. You get wiser – I feel quite wiser – but less fervent, less hopeful.” She added, “‘22’ is about how I was paralyzed by grief and memories and by being 22; all at once a baby and the oldest I’ve ever been. But now I’m 23 and I’ll probably be 24 by the time I’ll get to perform this song for people.”

Romanticism, the follow-up to 2021’s Public Storage, arrives May 3 via Ghostly. Read our Artist Spotlight interview with Hana Vu.

King Hannah Share Video for New Song ‘Davey Says’

King Hannah have unveiled a new single, ‘Dave Says’, taken from their upcoming LP Big Swimmer. It follows the previously released title track, featuring Sharon Van Etten. Check out its music video, directed by the band’s own Craig Whittle, below.

“’Davey Says’ is our ode to 90s, American indie garage rock,” vocalist Hannah Merrick said in a statement. “We wanted this to be a raucous, fuzzy, light-hearted moment in the album, but to still have that feeling of ‘youcandoanything-ness’. The opening line ‘Meet me before the party, I don’t want to walk in alone’ is our attempt at that classic American 90’s imagery, of coming-of-age nostalgia and romance, of late warm summer nights when the future is draped in front of you.”

Big Swimmer comes out May 31 via City Slang. Revisit our Artist Spotlight interview with King Hannah.
