What Is The Doll About?
The Doll is a reinterpretation of Prus’ classic novel. Set in 19th-century Warsaw, it follows Stanisław Wokulski, a self-made merchant who returns to Poland with a fortune. He becomes determined to win the love of Izabela Łęcka, an aristocrat whose family is struggling financially.
Wokulski sees Izabela as both the woman he loves and his ticket into the upper class. At the same time, Izabela is trying to escape the restrictions of her social position and build a life of her own. Before long, their relationship becomes tangled in ambition and obsession, with some jealousy thrown in for good measure.
Over the course of six episodes, the show explores relevant themes like social status and the cost of trying to reinvent yourself. It benefits from great production values, so period drama enthusiasts can find plenty here to love.
By the time the finale wraps up, you get answers about Stanisław and Izabela’s fates. While The Doll season 2 likely won’t happen, this modern adaptation is definitely worth your time.
