Choir of Young Believers’ Jannis Noya Makrigiannis Dead at 39

0

Jannis Noya Makrigiannis, the founder and mastermind behind the orchestral pop group Choir of Young Believers, has died. His label Ghostly International announced today that the Danish/Greek/Indonesian artist died last month following a short period of illness. Makrigiannis was 39 years old.

Having come up in the Copenhagen music scene, Makrigiannis left the city in 2006 and moved to the Greek island of Samos to write music for the project that would become Choir of Young Believers. “Samos gave me a lot of time on my own; no friends, no mobile, no computer, and no nightlife gives you a hell lot of time on your own,” he told Consequence in 2009. “So I wrote and thought a lot about music, why I was spending all of my time on this weird abstract thing, etc.”

Makrigiannis then returned Copenhagen and brought on a cast of musicians and friends to form Choir of Young Believers. With a rotating lineup, the band achieved multiple No. 1 songs in Denmark and found international success after ‘Hollow Talk’ was used in the Danish-Swedish crime TV show The Bridge. Following an appearance at SXSW in 2009, Ghostly reissued the group’s 2008 debut album This Is For The White In Your Eyes, which was followed by Rhine Gold in 2012 and Grasque followed in 2016. Last year, Choir of Young Believers returned with their final LP, Holy Smoke.

“Jannis was a gentle, kind soul, always appreciative of our team helping him to share his art with the world,” Ghostly wrote in their statement. “He always put art first in his process, and as a result, Jannis was often far ahead of the cultural curve. His music only seems to get better with time.”

Black Belt Eagle Scout has released ‘Nobody’, another single from her forthcoming album The Land, The Water, The Sky. It follows previous offerings ‘My Blood Runs Through This Land’ and ‘Don’t Give Up’. Check out its Evan Benally Atwood-directed video below.

“When I was growing up, I didn’t have very many Native role models to look to on TV or the radio,” Katherine Paul said of the song in a statement. “It was within my own community that I found inspiring role models through our elders and our community leaders. With Native representation in music and television slowly growing, I often ask myself where I stand within representation in music and how I want to be seen. This song is about the relationship I have with my own representation in music.”

The Land, The Water, The Sky is set for release on February 10 via Saddle Creek.

The Murder Capital have shared a new track, ‘Return My Head’, the latest preview of their forthcoming record Gigi’s Recovery – out January 20 via Human Season Records. Following previous cuts ‘Only Good Things’ and ‘A Thousand Lives’, the single arrives with an accompanying video directed by the band’s own Gabriel Paschal Blake. Check it out below.

“’Return My Head’ was written in a place of pure frustration, feeling like our sanity had been unwillingly removed through periods of isolation,” frontman James McGovern explained in a press release. “All I wanted at this point was to get my head back, and to throw it away again. But on my own terms. ‘Return my head, and throw it to the crowd’.”

Blake had this to say about the song’s visual:

I wanted to show the rag dolling that can occur to us going from one state of being to another, while always remaining being the same person. The extensions of ourselves that we create to protect ourselves even when we’re alone, and the evident and necessary advice that we receive to continue following and perusing our passions from our friends and family, demonstrated by my own family friends Megan, Nic, Ruairí and Pump.

To me, ‘Return My Head’ is the desire to return your mind to a place of peace and stability, and the belief that to do so, is possible. We shot it in my old secondary school recreational hall. We produced it ourselves. At its best to me, the narrative of the ‘Return My Head’ about coming back to a safety.

Ask Yourself These Questions Before Buying a Walk-In Bath

0

Most homes have a generic or drop-in bathtub in their bathrooms. It is nearly a common bathroom fixture to allow family members a good bathing experience. Typically, the setup includes a showerhead. The bathtub is often fixed to one wall of the bathroom. It is enclosed to allow people to sit on its ledge or stand in the tub when they shower.

If you are building a new bathroom or renovating your existing one and considering replacing your generic bathtub, here are a few ideas and questions to ask yourself before choosing a new bath.

How to choose a walk-in tub

It is important to research and consider various aspects before deciding which bathtub to purchase. It would help if you understand the various types of walk in baths, the features to look for, and the questions you should ask.

Types of walk-in tubs

  • Soaker. A deeper walk-in bath that allows users to immerse their entire body while seated in the walk-in tub.
  • Hydrotherapy. The tube includes water jets that massage the joints and muscles for pain relief.
  • Aerotherapy. Instead of water jets, the walk-in tub has an air jet system that releases air jets and massages certain body parts. However, air jets are more suitable for people with sensitive skin.
  • Aromatherapy. This type of walk-in bath uses an aerotherapy or hydrotherapy system to release essential minerals into the bath water for a spa-like experience for the bather.

Questions you should ask

  1. What is the size of your bathroom?

Walk-in tubs, including walk in bath shower, have different sizes. Thus, measuring the area where you want to install the new bathtub is important.

  1. How old is the plumbing system in your home?

The age of your plumbing system will matter. If it is very old, you need a professional plumber to ensure the plumbing system can pass Part H of the building regulations. Remember that the user has to stay in the walk-in bath while it drains.

  1. Do you have any mobility issues?

Your mobility is important. If you find stepping over a 20-centimetre step difficult, choose a walk-in bath with the lowest threshold. If you have trouble lowering and getting out of a sitting position, look for a walk-in bath with a higher seat.

  1. Can you afford a walk-in bath?

Your budget is a key consideration when purchasing a walk-in bath. The current price range is between £1,500 and £5,000 or more. Thus, it is necessary to determine the budget you can afford because you should also consider installation costs and other miscellaneous expenses.

  1. Does your bathroom need additional support?

It is important to have a structural engineer inspect your house and bathroom if it is your first time installing a bathtub because a walk-in bath is heavy. As it takes several litres of water, the weight of the bath increases, which puts pressure on the bathroom floor. Ensure that your home’s foundation can support the additional weight.

Your answers to these questions will help you decide whether you can purchase, install, and enjoy the benefits of a walk-in bathtub.
