Album Review: The WAEVE, ‘The WAEVE’

As soon as it kicks into gear, The WAEVE is framed as a conversation between two poetically inclined songwriters. “Hold the sky/ Inside your mouth/ Breathe your words/ Into my bones,” Rose Elinor Dougall, formerly of the Pipettes, sings on the haunting opener ‘Can I Call You’. Blur guitarist Graham Coxon then takes the lead first on the subsequent ‘Kill Me Again’, pleading, “Take me to your brightest sun/ Hold me fast beneath your hand/ I hang like a bird/ Above your sea and land.” The WAEVE may be a duo – Coxon and Dougall began their collaboration after meeting backstage at a socially distanced benefit concert in 2020, and have now started a family – but what makes their self-titled debut intriguing is that it often eschews the conventions of a duets album. Having established common ground, the pair seem less interested in simply bouncing ideas back and forth than coaxing each other to explore how far they can take them. This lends the songs a distinct air of playfulness, even if the overall atmosphere is inescapably one of impending doom.

You don’t have to compare and contrast these songs to get a sense of how Coxon and Dougall’s musical instincts collide; they allow each other’s voices to take up more space when necessary, but they also juxtapose them in subtle and compelling ways. A motorik pulse signals Coxon’s arrival on ‘Can I Call You’, introducing a fiery tension that takes the song in an unexpected direction and percolates throughout the LP. When Dougall sings of “All this weird energy/ Nowhere to put it” amid elegant synths and gentle percussion on ‘Sleepwalking’, you wonder if the song will erupt – but it’s not until its sixth and final minute that Coxon’s guitars sharpen it to a gleaming conclusion. They let the groove gain heft naturally, and it’s actually Coxon’s saxophone that does most of the heavy lifting alongside Dougall’s pensive vocals. It emerges, on songs like ‘All Along’, as an instrument at once soothing, wistful, and ominous, adding emotional texture to songs that might have otherwise felt listless without it.

For all their focus on space, the WAEVE don’t shy away from lush, cinematic arrangements, with half of the songs stretching over six minutes. ‘Drowning’ counters its dreaminess with a portentous sense of dread, layering instruments to the point of cacophony; the interplay between the duo’s voices, meanwhile, has never been more thrilling. But there are moments that don’t spring to life in the same way, drawing attention to lyrics that can feel trite in their apocalyptic reflections. The robotic post-punk of ‘Someone Up There’, with its chorus of “You’ve lost your power/ It’s all gone sour,” feels labored, even if its spikiness is refreshing in the context of the album. And though their voices once again complement each other on ‘Over and Over’, the song is so languid that it seems to lose faith in its own message: “Still we grow older and older and older/ But something feels new/ Constantly changing forever.”

It comes as somewhat of a surprise, then, that rather than capitalizing on the punk energy that drives much of it forward, The WAEVE ends with a series of similarly relaxed, jazz-inflected ballads. Those make better use of the duo’s talents and chemistry, however: while ‘Undine’ recycles a lot of the same lyrical ideas as ‘Over and Over’, its evocative use of brass, strings, and guitar, elevated by Coxon’s unusually heartfelt delivery, keep it engaging. The album may not have a strong enough concept to justify its musical grandiosity, but the sincerity that guides its final tracks feels earned. If the rest of the record is the sound of the duo probing each other, here they allow themselves to sit back and reflect. “Finding strange courage to say/ We’re getting deeper now,” Dougall admits on the closer, ‘You’re All I Want to Know’, gaze still locked forward.

Ozzy Osbourne Retires From Touring, Cancels Upcoming Tour Dates

Ozzy Osbourne has announced his retirement from touring and canceled all his upcoming tour dates. In a statement shared on social media, the Prince of Darkness explained that he’s “physically weak” and “not physically capable” of handling the travel necessary for touring.

“This is probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to share with my loyal fans,” Osbourne wrote. “As you may all know, four years ago, this month, I had a major accident, where I damaged my spine. My one and only purpose during this time has been to get back on stage. My singing voice is fine. However, after three operations, stem cell treatments, endless physical therapy sessions, and most recently groundbreaking Cybernics (HAL) Treatment, my body is still physically weak.” He continued:

I am honestly humbled by the way you’ve all patently held onto your tickets for all this time, but in all good conscience, I have now come to the realization that I’m not physically capable of doing my upcoming European/UK tour dates, as I know I couldn’t deal with the travel required. Believe me when I say that the thought of disappointing my fans really FUCKS ME UP, more than you will ever know.

Never would I have imagined that my touring days would have ended this way. My team is currently coming up with ideas for where I will be able to perform without having to travel from city to city and country to country.

I want to thank my family……my band……my crew……my longtime friends, Judas Priest, and of course my fans for their endless dedication, loyalty, and support, and for giving me the life that I never dreamed I would have.

La Luz’s Shana Cleveland Unveils New Single ‘A Ghost’

La Luz’s Shana Cleveland has unveiled a new single, ‘A Ghost’, alongside an accompanying video. It’s taken from her new solo album Manzanita, which was announced with the track ‘Faces in the Firelight’. Check out the Vice Cooler-directed visual for ‘A Ghost’ below.

“I never really gave pregnancy and childbirth very much thought, and when I did become pregnant I was surprised by how much of a psychedelic experience it was,” Cleveland said of the new song in a press release. “A subtitle for this album could be: ‘What to Expect When You Are Open to the Mysteries of the Universe.’ When I sat outside the house looking out across the field, the chemistry and shape of my body constantly changing, I understood that I was no different than the plants and animals around me.”

Manzanita is slated for release on March 10 via Hardly Art Records.

Death Valley Girls Share Video for New Song ‘Magic Powers’

Death Valley Girls have unveiled ‘Magic Powers’, the third offering from their upcoming full-length Islands in the Sky. It follows previous singles ‘Sunday’ and ‘What Are the Odds’. Check it out below.

Discussing the new song, the band’s Bonnie Bloomgarden said in a statement: “I was walking down the street, and all of the sudden it dawned on me that almost all the things that kids bullied me about, or I got in trouble for in school, or was told would make me never amount to anything, were actually my magic powers! My voice isn’t too high, or funny, it’s how I cast my spells! I’m not a bad student, I love learning, and being a seeker! And I’m not a crazy person with weird ideas, that will never fit into society, I’m a witch, and I have magic powers!”

Islands in the Sky is due out February 24 via Suicide Squeeze Records.

Ducks Ltd., Mo Troper, and Ratboys’ Julia Steiner Cover the Feelies’ ‘Invitation’

Ducks Ltd. have teamed up with Mo Troper and Ratboys’ Julia Steiner for a cover of the Feelies’ 1991 track ‘Invitation’. It’s the latest installment of their series The Sincerest Form of Flattery, which has seen them tackling the Cure’s ‘In Between Days’ with Jane Inc. and the Jesus and Mary Chain’s ‘Head On’ with illuminati hotties’ Sarah Tudzin. Take a listen below.

Talking about the cover, the band’s Tom McGreevy said in a statement:

In Toronto, it’s a really big thing on Halloween for bands to do cover sets where they dress up as the band they are covering. This year, Evan [Lewis] and a group of people who have all played in Ducks at one point or another got together to do a Feelies cover set and they were amazing! So good in fact that I immediately wanted to preserve their excellent cover band for posterity while also insinuating myself in the end result! It was a real family affair, with Paul Erlichman (who sometimes plays in our live band and does the string arrangements on our records), Katie Ryan(who used to play bass in our touring band) and the incomparable Kurt Marble (who used to be our live drummer) all playing on it. Another big part of what appealed about doing this cover was putting together a new vocal arrangement for the choruses, and so we got two artists who we really love to help us out with that, the Julia Steiner of Ratboys and Portland power pop icon Mo Troper. They’re both so good and have such distinct voices and it is super exciting to get to hear them on this song that I think about all the time. Feelies forever!

The Tallest Man on Earth Announces New Album ‘Henry St.’, Shares Video for New Single

The Tallest Man on Earth has announced his first album of original songs in four years. Henry St., the follow-up to 2019’s I Love You. It’s a Fever Dream., comes out April 14 via ANTI-. Today’s announcement comes with the release of a new single called ‘Every Little Heart’. Check out its Jeroen Dankers–directed video below, along with the album’s cover art and tracklist.

Produced by Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sanborn, Henry St. features contributions from Ryan Gustafson (guitar, lap steel, ukulele), TJ Maiani (drums), CJ Camerieri (trumpet, French horn), Phil Cook (piano, organ), Rob Moose, yMusic (strings), and Adam Schatz (saxophone).

“Henry St. is the most playful, most me album yet, because it covers so many of the different noises in my head,” Kristian Matsson said in a statement. “When you overthink things, you get further away from your original ideas. And God knows I overthink things when I’m by myself.” The time in isolation also brought him some newfound peace of mind. “Having been away from it taught me that making music and performing is what I’m doing for the rest of my life, and I’m so grateful for it. It has given me new confidence and playfulness. This is what I do. It’s unconditional.”

Last year, the Tallest Man on Earth released the covers collection Too Late for Edelweiss.
