The Clean’s Hamish Kilgour Dead at 65

Hamish Kilgour, the New Zealand musician who co-founded the beloved rock band the Clean, has died at the age of 65. The drummer had been reported missing last week after last being seen at a shopping mall in Christchurch, and his body was found there yesterday (December 5). A cause of death has not been revealed.

Hamish formed the Clean with his brother David in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1978. Their debut single, 1981’s ‘Tally Ho!’, helped establish what became known as establish the “Dunedin Sound” and put the then-fledging indie label Flying Nun on the map. The band released a pair of EPs, Boodle Boodle Boodle and Great Sounds Great…, before taking a hiatus. The Kilgour brothers recorded experimental music as The Great Unwashed before returning to the Clean in the late ’80s, reuniting with bassist Robert Scott for a tour and the In-A-Live EP. The Clean’s first proper full-length, Vehicle, arrived in 1990 on Flying Nun/Rough Trade, and the group followed it up with two more albums, 1995’s Modern Rock and 1996’s Unknown Country.

After moving to New York City, Hamish formed the Mad Scene with Lisa Siegel. They issued a series of albums, including 1993’s A Trip Thru Monsterland, 1995’s Sealight, 1996’s Chinese Honey, and 2012’s Blip, which was produced by Sonic Boom. As their influence was felt in a new generation of American indie rock bands like Pavement, Superchunk, and Guided by Voices, the Clean reconvened in 2000 and put out another album, Getaway, the following year. It was released on Merge, the independent label founded by Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance, and featured contributions from Yo La Tengo’s Georgia Hubley and Ira Kaplan. In 2003, Flying Nun and Merge issued the career-spanning Anthology. The Clean’s last LP was 2009’s Mister Pop.

In 2014, Hamish released his debut solo album, All of It and Nothing, which he followed with Finklestein four years later. The Clean were inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame in 2017.

“With very heavy hearts, we can confirm that Hamish Kilgour has passed away in his home country of New Zealand,” Merge Records said in a statement, continuing:

As a founding member of the Clean, with his brother, David, and Robert Scott, Hamish produced one of the most important and timeless bodies of work in rock music. As a drummer, Hamish had a propulsive, instantly recognizable style and an understated power; he was a joy to watch play. Hamish was one of the most colorful and creative musicians we have been lucky to work with, both as a singer, guitarist, and songwriter with the group he started with Lisa Siegel, the Mad Scene, and, of course, with the Clean. Hamish was also an accomplished visual artist, and his fantastical drawings adorn many record sleeves.

We feel lucky to have known him. Our thoughts are with his family and his fellow members of the New Zealand music community. Save travels, Hamish.

5 Changes That Will Make a Big Difference in Your Business

You might be satisfied with how your business is going. It might be growing at a decent clip, and you are making good profits as a result. However, you might be leaving money on the table if you don’t look closely at how you are doing things. You may be able to increase revenue, lower expenses, or work more efficiently with a few tweaks here and there.

Not only that, but if you need to make changes, you might not notice until it’s too late. Too many entrepreneurs take it for granted when a business seems to be running smoothly. They won’t look at things critically and allow everything to continue without changes. While the adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is right in some situations, it’s inappropriate for your business and livelihood.

By taking a close look at your business, you can identify small and big things that either could work better or might make an impact down the road. Of course, it’s always best to make changes as soon as possible to get the maximum benefit out of them. So here are five changes that will make a big difference in your business.

Examine All of Your Work Processes

Every year you should conduct an audit of the procedures related to every one of your workflows. The goal should be to look for spots where you could be more efficient or more efficient. For example, is there paperwork that goes across the desks of three people when it only needs to go to two? Is there work that could be automated?

Even though your procedures might work right now for your business, efficiency can provide additional benefits. For one, the less time your team works on a procedure, the more time they will have for other tasks that will help grow your business. Secondly, even though something works now, eventually, you may reach a point where your business has grown so much that your inefficient methods need to be revised. It’s much easier to make changes earlier than when you are in a pinch. In addition, consider investing in an enterprise rank tracker to track your progress.

Focus on Retention as Well as New Customers

Launching a new business always focuses on getting as many people through the doors or on your website as possible. The more potential people there are to buy your products, the more you can convert. However, as you get established, you need to start shifting that focus toward keeping the customers you have.

There are several reasons for this. One is that it is cheaper to keep a customer than it is to get a new one. With an existing customer, you already have some data about them that you can use to make their experience more beneficial to them. The second is that a first-time customer may buy something from you, but if you’ve developed trust with them, they may buy even more with subsequent purchases. This is because you’ve already shown that you are reliable and provide good products and services.

Customer service is a big part of customer retention. All of your products and services may be the best in the world, but if they don’t feel valued and appreciated, then your customers won’t come back. So take customer service training and have your staff take it too. That way, you will provide the best possible experience to your clients.

Audit Your Insurance

When it comes close to the time to renew your insurance coverage, make sure that you examine your policies. You need to get a sense of what you are covered for and ensure that nothing is missing or changed. You can also get a better deal from another provider. You need to better understand general liability insurance coverage to make informed decisions. You might be missing certain protections that are necessary for your business, or you could be paying for something you don’t. Look it over with a fine-tooth comb, so you aren’t left holding the bag if something bad happens.

Create Content

Is your website working for you? Unfortunately, only a few businesses launch their website and then forget about it other than to post some sales and specials updates every once in a while. The fact is, the best websites are ones that are actively drawing in users and customers. Using good search engine optimization (SEO) strategies can help with this. One strategy that helps actively draw users in involves using a comprehensive keyword research service. You can connect better with your audience by regularly writing clear, easy-to-understand content that uses words from your keyword research.

Create regular content that is well-written and informative. This can be something other than sales content. In fact, it should be primarily information-based content that engages the audience. Search engines will index your site and look for authoritative content. If you’ve done it right, along with some other website development methods, your website will increase in rankings. Customers will be more likely to click on your page if it appears at the top of the search.

Provide Motivation For Your Team?

Employees are the best and most valuable assets you have. Just like with your equipment and building, you need to provide them with regular maintenance to keep morale up and to keep them productive. The more satisfied your employees are, the more money you will make. It’s that simple.

To start, ensure you regularly check in on everyone, not just to provide feedback but to hear what they have to say about their jobs. Make sure their voices are heard and make changes if possible, and you see fit. If you can’t make changes, then clearly explain why that is. Give your staff time to relax, such as office celebrations, holiday gatherings, and even office contests. Be flexible and understand that your staff all have lives outside of work. Help them balance work and personal lives, and they will be much more appreciative. It can make your workplace a valued place to be and keep your turnover low. You are not in it alone. Your staff is there to support you and your vision. Make sure that they feel respected and a valued part of the team.

You might think that your business is doing just fine, and it might be true. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t do things better to either get your business to another level or to avoid problems down the road. Use these tips so make sure that your business is running as well as it possibly can.

Wild World: The International Appeal of Online Casinos

When casinos migrated from physical locations to websites during the advent of the internet, they completely changed the game for gamblers. Poker players can now play together regardless of where they live.

But how does this industry manage to appeal to such a wide audience? There are players across the world logging on each day to see what online casinos have to offer them. Although the answer isn’t as simple as the quality of the games, we’d like to break down how and why online casinos continue to cast such a wide net and grab such a huge audience.

International Availability

Online casinos are available everywhere and with such a huge selection of topics for people to be passionate about, there’s no shortage of game themes to represent. Casinos manage the demand across regions by maintaining a variety of themes, such as this Irish casino that does a good job of keeping things eclectic. Irish-themed themed slots like Charms and Clovers can be found alongside titles like Football Glory, Aztec Magic Bonanza, and Wild Fishin’. This way, players coming from all walks of life with different interests can find games that really interest them.

Players Unite

Beyond just the sheer number and types of games online casinos offer, they’re also a great place for communities to form. Poker communities, slots enthusiasts, and gambling experts alike all have a place to compete and relax. They also have tournaments to look forward to and strategies to talk over in website forums. Having communities that can talk about and engage with your product is essential to having a successful product, and that’s why they work so well across the globe.

Not only do you and your friends down the street have a say in how to improve customer experience, but so does the group you all love to play with from India. Online casinos are places that can be experienced together with people across the globe. And because of that, they can be improved by that same group of people. It’s that sort of “for the world, from the world” mentality that gives it longevity and a wide appeal.

A Willingness To Evolve

Online casinos are willing to do whatever it takes to stay relevant and keep up with the times. That’s a couple of big factors in whether or not your business can be timeless. But when players wanted live dealers, they made it a possibility. When customers asked to be able to pay in crypto, they figured out how to make it work. We fully expect to see full virtual reality casinos in the next few years as well. The bottom line is: they’re always willing to do what it takes to recognise world trends and stay in line with them. It’s easy for the world to love you when you show so much love to the world.

And that pretty much sums it up. Casinos are able to maintain international appeal because they bring people together from across the world, give them the games they love (and even some they didn’t know they would love), and keep their technology and business practices up-to-date. There are a few other industries that might want to start taking notes.

Caroline Polachek Announces New Album ‘Desire, I Want to Turn Into You’, Shares New Song

Caroline Polachek has announced the details of her next album: Desire, I Want to Turn Into You arrives on February 14 via Perpetual Novice. Today’s announcement comes with the release of the new single ‘Welcome to My Island’, which was produced by Dan Nigro, Polachek, Danny L Harle, and Jim-E Stack. Check it out below, along with the album’s cover art (photographed by Aidan Zamiri).

“While I was writing this song, I almost saw this from a point of view of egg trapping the sperm… It’s maniacal, huge ego,” Polachek told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1. “This is the brattiest song I’ve ever made. I needed to go full brat rant mode. I don’t think attitude wise I’ve ever really gotten to tear into this feeling of conflict and frustration. The record is dealing with catharsis and repression a lot. And I think setting up that tension on track one was part of the mission statement.”

She continued: “‘Welcome To My Island’ was the first song written on this album. The funny secret about this one is it was actually written for is it was written for Pang, my last album. Which makes it by far the oldest song on the album. As soon as I wrote this song I knew that this was actually not for Pang, it was the start of something new and now it literally is. It’s track one on my new album and the title just feels so emblematic of that kind of all encompassing feeling of being in love and being in a state of passion… It doesn’t even need to be a romantic kind of love. It goes beyond wanting to be with someone… It’s about wanting to be subsumed.”

Desire, I Want to Turn Into You will include the previously released songs ‘Billions’ and ‘Sunset’. Caroline Polachek’s debut solo album, Pang, came out in 2019.
