Licorice Pizza & 6 Other Nostalgic Coming of Age Movies to Watch This Summer

0

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza is a nostalgic trip to the summer of 1973 in the San Fernando Valley. The film follows Gary Valentine and Alana Kane (Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim in their film debuts) as they meet, become friends, and start a business selling waterbeds. Gary is a fifteen-year-old actor, while Alana is a photographer’s assistant in her twenties. Though Alana initially rebuffs him, Gary tries to pursue her romantically despite their age difference. Their rapport is easy and charming to watch, thanks to the screenplay’s excellent dialogue.

Much of the story revolves around their adventures around the Valley, particularly those involving questionable characters in the film industry. The ensemble cast includes Sean Penn as an actor, Tom Waits as a film director, Bradley Cooper as producer Jon Peters, and other characters also based on real people. This element of realism amplifies the sense of nostalgia that comes from the summery 70s setting and its period styling. Here are eight other coming-of-age movies with a similar nostalgic tone.

mid90s

Jonah Hill’s mid90s is a semi-autobiographical dramedy set in 90s Los Angeles. The story follows 13-year-old Stevie (Sunny Suljic), who lives with his single mother (Katherine Waterston) and abusive older brother (Lucas Hedges). Stevie spends his time avoiding the house, and one day he meets a group of young skateboarders and is instantly captivated by their easy camaraderie. Though he can’t skate himself, he befriends the boys and is soon drawn into their carefree, daredevil lifestyle. These skateboarders are portrayed by real skaters, which allows for plenty of action montages. Even so, the film leaves room for dreamy, reflective moments where the characters skate along streets at sunset or sit around joking in the summer sun.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Based on the novel by Stephen Chbosky, this film adaptation remains true to the book’s epistolary structure, using voiceover narration to track the state of Charlie’s mental health. Charlie (Logan Lerman) writes journal entries in the wake of his best friend’s suicide, which has left him feeling isolated and depressed. At school, he doesn’t have any friends – until he meets a group of students a year older than him. They accept him into their group even though he’s very different from them; he’s quiet, introspective, and reserved, while they are wild and carefree. Over time, they encourage him to come out of his shell and live his life to the fullest. However, Charlie knows that they’re going to graduate soon and he’s terrified of being left alone again. Even though this fear – as well as Charlie’s past traumas – darken a lot of the film, much of it is bright and optimistic, and cinematic in a way that only coming-of-age stories can be.

Lady Bird

Lady Bird follows the tumultuous relationship between Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) and her mother Marion (Laurie Metcalf). Their working-class family lives in Sacramento, but Lady Bird dreams of going to college in a big city, even though she knows she can’t afford it. Over the course of the film, she seeks to redefine herself by descending further into her Lady Bird persona, drifting away from her friends, and distancing herself from her mom. Though the film is full of drama, it’s also a comedy with plenty of lighthearted moments. The story begins in the fall of 2002 and progresses through summer, featuring dips the pool, visits to the local garden, and awe-filled brambles through the upper-class streets around Lady Bird’s neighbourhood. The whole film is tinged with a sense of nostalgia, thanks to Greta Gerwig’s clear directorial vision.

Flipped

Flipped is a coming-of-age romcom directed and co-written by Rob Reiner, and based on the novel by Wendelin Van Draanen. In the film adaptation, the story begins in a pleasant suburban area in 1957, when seven-year-old Bryce (Callan McAuliffe) moves in across the street from Juli (Madeline Carroll). Juli thinks it’s love at first sight, but Bryce doesn’t feel the same way. He avoids Juli and, as they get older, does everything he can to deter her. The film alternates between their two perspectives, using voiceover narration to show the differences between their characters. Juli is a passionate young woman who stands for kindness, environmentalism, and empathy, while Bryce is more concerned with his social status and reputation. There’s also a clear difference in their families’ values, which shapes both of them. Though Reiner is best known for his work on Stand by Me, Flipped is laced with a different kind of nostalgia as it looks back several decades before its time.

Boogie Nights

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights shares Licorice Pizza‘s 70s San Fernando Valley setting. In Boogie Nights, teenager Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg) is a high school dropout working as a busboy in a nightclub. He lives with his father and an emotionally abusive mother. Eager to escape his life, he accepts an offer to star in adult films and moves to San Fernando Valley to begin his new career. Eddie quickly rises to fame, and the film goes on to explore Hollywood’s Golden Age of Porn in a comedic way. Everything about the film, from the soundtrack to the hairstyling, is a cinematic love letter to the 70s. However, even through the warm lens of nostalgia, Boogie Nights dives into darker waters when Eddie goes faces some challenging experiences.

Almost Famous

Based on the experiences of the film’s writer-director Cameron Crowe, Almost Famous follows aspiring music journalist William Miller (Patrick Fugit) as he attempts to write an article for Rolling Stone in the 70s. William manages to join a rock band – and their groupies – on tour, but nobody takes him seriously because he’s only fifteen. The lead guitarist (Billy Crudup) brushes off his interview-y questions, and the girl he’s interested in (Kate Hudson) insists that she’s not a groupie but a “Band Aid”. Though his coming-of-age experience is very different to what many teens experience, the divide seen between William and the adults is something they will recognize. He’s desperate to be taken seriously, but at the same time, he can’t live up to the expectations he’s been set by the magazine. Meanwhile, his mom (Frances McDormand) still treats him like a young boy. William’s adventures on tour make for a memorable movie, and the summery 70s settings add an extra layer of nostalgia to pair with the period music.

What is The Hundred and who are the 2022 favourites?

Although many diehard fans consider test cricket as the pinnacle of the sport, there’s no denying the impact the Twenty20 format is having on the popularity of the game – particularly among young fans and families.

Notorious for its fast-paced action and regular boundaries, T20’s have ensured cricket has remained palatable for a younger demographic of casual fans who aren’t particularly fond of watching a match that takes place over an entire day – or in the case of test cricket – five days.

With the success of the Big Bash League in Australia and the Indian Premier League in the sub-continent, the UK was yearning for a T20 competition of its own to help jolt the short-form of the game at a domestic level back into living rooms.

UK cricketing fans’ wishes were granted, with 2021 acting as the inaugural season of The Hundred, a professional limited overs tournament which includes eight men’s and women’s franchises across England and Wales. The first season was a roaring success, with more than half a million tickets sold, 55% of which were made by buyers new to the game.

On the field, the Southern Brave were ultimately crowned the men’s champions after defeating Birmingham Phoenix, and in doing so, wrote their way into the history books as the first winners of the competition.

With the second instalment of The Hundred now underway, let’s take a look at the three early favourites in the cricket betting online odds on the men’s side and how they have fared in their 2022 campaigns thus far.

Trent Rockets

Tied for the shortest odds at 7/2, the Trent Rockets will be looking to improve on their third-place finish in 2021 and reach this year’s final. Their campaign couldn’t have started any better, as at the time of writing, they were unblemished after securing emphatic wins over the Northern Superchargers and Birmingham Phoenix. They will be further bolstered when their Afghani leg-spinner Rashia Khan returns to the side, who will miss a portion of the season due to international commitments.

Southern Brave

Last year’s champions, the Southern Brave are the joint favourites with the Trent Rockets (7/2). Boasting a star-studded line-up including the likes of Quinton de Kock, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Davies and captain James Vince, they are proving yet again that they will be tough to beat once the finals roll around. Also recording a strong start to the season, they cruised to a comprehensive win over the Welsh Fire in their opening fixture, thanks in large part to their captain’s performance with the bat, whose 71 runs steered his side to victory.

While Southern Brave fans would have been buoyed by their team’s opening match of the season, the Southampton franchise were brought back down to earth a little bit when they took on Birmingham Phoenix a week later in what was a grand final rematch. The four-headed monster of Vince, De Kock, Stoinis and Davies managed just 66 runs between them, while the Phoenix’s 20-year-old Will Sneed registered a ton – the first-ever century in the competition’s history. It will be a loss they can certainly learn from, and with the abundance of international experience that exists within the side, it will only be a matter of time before they bounce back.

London Spirit

The only other team to remain undefeated at the time of writing, the London Spirit have found themselves as the third favourite to take out The Hundred crown. With a narrow victory over the Oval Invincibles in their opening match, they followed that resilient win with a dominant display to triumph by 53 runs against the Manchester Originals. With absolute gamebreakers in their side such as Glenn Maxwell and captain Eoin Morgan, they are the last side you want to play in a one-off finals contest. Additionally, there will be some added motivation for the Spirit this year with the recent passing of their coach and cricketing legend Shane Warne.

When speaking with the press, Maxwell alluded to how excited he was to be a member of the London Spirit squad, along with how much he was looking forward to learning under the tutelage of Warne.

“As soon as I was picked up by London [Spirit] in the draft, I was on the phone to Warnie non-stop trying to work out the team, different combinations,” he said.

“The amount he talked about this place, he loved it. He almost bragged that he was coaching the team playing at Lord’s, which was always quite funny. He absolutely loved it here and we are going to be doing our best to put our best foot forward for him.”

Whether you’re simply a fan of the sport or you enjoy partaking in tips on cricket, the 2022 season of The Hundred is shaping up to be a memorable one.

Album Review: Cass McCombs, ‘Heartmind’

The songs of Cass McCombs can be both strangely comforting and subtly foreboding. “It’s such a glad day,” remarks the protagonist on ‘New Earth’, the breezy, playful third track on his tenth album, in the immediate wake of the apocalypse. “Thank God time has ended.” Despite referencing a time when “Mr. Musk was in a bad way” and “tweeting was muted all season,” you can’t be sure exactly what ties this fallen world has to the one we’re currently living through; McCombs has suggested it’s an entirely different one, even insisting that Musk is a fictional character. The magic is in the way the song triggers your imagination, whether you choose to simply enjoy its newfound lightness or ponder if there’s anything to be gleaned from the destruction that came before. No one path is forced on the listener. As two traditionally opposed forces merge on the album’s title, so does Heartmind bridge the gap between other seemingly conflicting worlds: old and new, love and heartache, empathy and resentment, tragedy and humour. And so it eases the friction between them, inviting you to both take a step back and keep digging deeper.

Like the image that graces its cover, Heartmind is bathed in a warm radiance that seeps through the darker edges of its sound without overshadowing them. It houses some of the most earworm-y tunes of McCombs’ career, and no matter how acquainted you are with his back catalog or what you seek from it, it takes very little effort to glide along with it. After the minor turbulence of opener ‘Music Is Blue’ comes the record’s most memorable single, ‘Karaoke’, which frames the paradoxical puzzle of a relationship against a shimmery instrumental. What’s most compelling about it isn’t so much the fact that it cleverly incoporates the titles of several karaoke standards – “You sang a melody, unchained/ But will your love godspeed to me?” – but how it never reveals much about the love in question, instead underlining the oddly funny, irrevocably human ways we tend to look for answers where there probably are none.

In more ways than one, music is really at the heart of the record. Any serious obsession with, it seems to ironically suggest, turns out to be kind of silly, sinister even. “Once upon a time, I told myself/ Music was all there was/ Like a ghost town in quarantine,” McCombs sings at the start of the album, and from there, begins to carve a new relationship with the form, almost like starting anew. (It’s one of the things that come to find a vital purpose in ‘New Earth’: “Music was forked like a soul infernal/ Today we play/ And ring the tones eternal.”)  He revisits a line from ‘Music Is Blue’ on ‘Belong to Heaven’, an elegy for a lost friend, where it becomes, “Music was all we needed.” (Heartmind is dedicated to three of McCombs’ friends who have recently passed away, Neal Casal, Girls’ Chet ‘JR’ White, and Sam Jayne.)

At the risk of sounding overearnest, we is the differentiating word here – while McCombs is the only singer on ‘Music Is Blue’, the rest of the album features guest vocals from the likes of Wynonna Judd, Danielle Haim, and Lily Chapin, among others. Not only does this spirit of collaboration weave new meaning out of the conflict that haunts the narrator, it also helps the songs come alive: Charlie Burnham’s vocal and fiddle contributions and Charlotte Greve’s saxophone sweetly accompany McCombs on ‘Unproud Warrior’, lending a genuine soulfulness to a complex, ambiguous character study, while Kassa Overall’s fluid drumming ambles along like a breathing creature, a restless memory.

The nuanced perspective McCombs brings to ‘Unproud Warrior’ renders it a highlight, but Heartmind benefits from what is often a looser, less heady approach. It allows him to shift course right away on the cumbia-inspired psychedelia of ‘Krakatau’, before settling into another lush country ballad, ‘A Blue, Blue Band’, which, by obviating narrative detail, taps into a fundamental quality of music: “You feel a release in your body/ From the instant they start.” On the surface, at least, there’s less satire, less of a danger to it than the kind implicated in ‘Karaoke’. It’s more sincere, but no less elusive in its pleasure, than a lot of what McCombs has offered in the past; it feels familiar but unbound to a single identity, style, or experience. The album’s liner notes cite a quote by 12th-13th century Sufi mystic Ibn Arabi: “My heart has become capable of any form/ My heart has become receptive of every form.” And so, as McCombs sings amidst dark, dense ripples of instrumentation on the final track, it “stops and starts, giving itself away,” ceaselessly, like music.

The Gig Economy: Perks of Working Independently?

Advantages of the Gig Economy

How people work has radically changed, mainly owing to the rapid technological developments today. Of course, the internet is one of the most significant driving forces behind the shift in how people work today. In the same way gamblers, for instance, prefer playing their favorite games on Japan online casino sites instead of visiting casinos in person, a lot of people are now choosing to work remotely.

As a result, people who don’t use tech-based services such as the internet may end up being left behind by the benefits of the gig economy. Likewise, cities and countries with highly developed technology are the most well-established in the gig economy. America, for example, is one of the many countries today with a thriving gig economy. According to Forbes, roughly 57 million US workers were part of the burgeoning gig economy in 2018.

So, who can be a gig worker? Well, anyone can work in the gig economy provided you have some skills that could be useful to individuals or companies, as there are many gig economy jobs today. Mind you, it doesn’t even have to be something intricate, and it could be as simple as shopping for someone who might not have time to do it! Hold on. Getting compensated to go shopping? Sounds like a dream come true, right? How much money will you make? Well, PayScale estimates that personal shoppers receive a median pay of $12.55 per hour. How awesome is that? Read on to discover more about working in the gig economy.

Characteristics of the Gig Economy

The gig economy is based on temporary and flexible jobs. Furthermore, it typically involves connecting with clienteles online. With your PC, tablet or smartphone and reliable connection to the internet, you can work and earn money just about anywhere at any time.

This way of working can be found in many different occupations ranging from content writers to taxi drivers, cleaners, web developers, designers, and so forth. Fundamentally, it is a vast and diverse system, which usually has the following characteristics:

  • Wide variations in the tasks
  • Flexible working hours
  • Project-based economy
  • Use of information and communications technology
  • Gig workers are more likely to be part-time
  • Working from home
  • No stationary office as some gigs usually involve moving or driving around.

Now that you understand the gig economy’s basic structure, let’s look at the perks it offers both companies and the workers themselves.

Gig Economy Perks for Companies

By hiring gig workers, independent contractors or freelancers, as they are commonly known, organizations can avoid employee compensation costs, and they’ll be doing their business a favor. They won’t have to pay for traditional employee benefits, which usually cover health insurance, paid leaves, etc. Instead, the independent contractors shoulder these costs themselves without adding an extra burden to the company.

For example, a company will not be required to spend a dime on training and onboarding. The majority of gig laborers usually already have experience and are often well-trained to get the job done properly. Therefore, companies will enjoy saving a significant chunck of their profits and use it for other purposes like reinvesting the funds back into the business.

Working with freelancers also lets the company save on a ton of office space. Depending on the job and their lifestyle, most freelancers work remotely from home. Therefore, businesses won’t need to set up another workspace in the office or buy office supplies for them.

Moreover, gig workers offer well-balanced solutions for companies. They can easily hire the independent contractors whenever they need to accomplish short-term projects without having to undergo the hassle of planning for overhead expenditures.

How Workers Benefit from the Gig Economy

With the gig economy, there are tons of different opportunities for everyone, and there are some gigs specifically suited for different people. New mothers, for instance, can work in their spare time and offer paid services from the comfort of their homes. There are no barriers!

Better still, the benefits you receive will be yours and yours alone as they aren’t linked to any one particular company or job. The profit you make is yours to keep; the ideas that you have are yours, and you do not have to give a share of your earnings to anyone else.

Furthermore, the popularity of gig economy has grown exponentially over the last five years and is now a prevalent way for individuals to boost their overall paychecks with extra streams of income. So, even though full-time workers prefer the so-called security of their 9-to-5s, they have realized the gig economy’s power and embraced it as a workable side hustle.

Additionally, besides providing work, the emergence of the gig economy has led to the growth of online platforms where individuals can also socialize and grow their networks. As such local services and micro businesses are promoted and empowered, making it a win-win for everyone involved!

The Way We Work is Changing

With the increasing desire to enjoy flexibility and freedom in careers, the gig economy has allowed many independent contractors to align their lives with the current situations. If you’ve been looking to change things up in how you work, then you should jump on the gig economy bandwagon via platforms such as:

  • Upwork
  • Fiverr
  • Appen
  • com
  • Toptal
  • Tonga
  • 99Designs
  • PeoplePerHour

If you’ve already been part of the gig economy in one way or another, we would like to know your experience. So, share your thoughts right here in the comments section, and who knows, you might just inspire someone to finally take the initiative and start their freelancing career!

1) Do your research

Before you start trading, it’s important to do your research and understand the basics of forex. It would be best if you had a good understanding of the different currency pairs and how they work. You can find this information online or in books and magazines about forex trading.

It’s also important to be aware of the risks involved in forex trading. This includes understanding things like leverage, margin, and stop-loss orders. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of making money, but it’s important to remember that this is a long-term investment. Don’t expect to make huge profits overnight, and don’t get discouraged if you have some losing trades. 4) Have patience

Finally, the most important thing to remember when trading forex is to have patience. This is a long-term investment, and it takes time to see results. “This song explores the ways we seek validation and how it motivates the way we interact with the world around us,” THICK said of the track in a statement. “Whether you look for it externally or internally, it begs the question, ‘Who is this all for and is it ever enough?'”

Maya Hawke Shares Video for New Single ‘Sweet Tooth’

0

Maya Hawke has shared a video for ‘Sweet Tooth’, the second single from her upcoming sophomore album MOSS. It follows the previously released track ‘Thérèse’. Check out the Celine Sutter-directed clip below.

“’Sweet Tooth’ was the last song written for MOSS,” Hawke said of the song in a statement. “The lyrics were written in Atlanta while filming, but Christian [Lee Hutson] and I recorded the first demo in Nashville. “When we finished the first recording session, I felt this eruption of joy and I knew this feeling had to be on the record.

Sutter added of the video: “‘Sweet Tooth’ was born out of conversations with Maya about the song, the album, and the unique feel of sweetness, cavity, death, and joy. We discussed care, caretaking, and childhood adult friendships. In the edit, we found the deconstructed nature of the dream with the behind-the-scenes footage – as if Maya was participating in the making of, and the theater of, her own funeral. ‘Sweet Tooth’ is a trippy, playful video that embraces the dichotomy of its themes: a joyful and melancholic funeral, a fake dream world with real footage, care and loneliness, sweetness and pain.”

MOSS is set for release on September 23 via Mom+Pop.

Mallbangs Announces New EP ‘Checking For Daggers’, Shares New Song ‘New Face’

0

Mallbangs, the project of Atlanta musician Aidy, has announced a new EP titled Checking For Daggers. It’s set to arrive on October 14, and its first single, ‘New Face’, is out today. Check it out below.

The follow-up to 2021’s Put Me Out EP, Checking For Daggers was produced by Grouplove’s Daniel Gleason. “‘New Face’ is about different sentiments of a friend who passed away in 2020 who had struggled with drug abuse; just sort of a way to express feelings surrounding that,” Aidy explained in a statement. “Musically it’s a crazy one because all the parts were there in the original demo. It was when we added Daniel’s bass line and Benjamin’s drumming that it just exploded the way it does now. This was a really fun one to work on. We ended up using this prototype guitar from Mike Baranik that Daniel was loaned for a while. That weird, muted guitar part in the verse is where you can really hear it because it has this cool piece attached to the bridge that makes things sort of sound like a sitar.”
