The Recording Academy paid tribute to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with an all-star tribute at the 2023 Grammy Awards. Questlove served as the musical director of the segment, which featured appearances by artists including Missy Elliott, Big Boi, Busta Rhymes, De La Soul, DJ Drama, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Grandmaster Flash, Grandmaster Mele Mel & Scorpio/Ethiopian King, Ice-T, The Lox, Method Man, Nelly, Public Enemy, Queen Latifah, Rahiem, Rakim, Run-DMC, Salt-N-Pepa, Spinderella, and Too $hort. “For five decades, hip-hop has not only been a defining force in music, but a major influence on our culture,” Harvey Mason Jr., the CEO of the Recording Academy, said in a statement. “Its contributions to art, fashion, sport, politics, and society cannot be overstated. I’m so proud that we are honoring it in such a spectacular way on the Grammy stage. It is just the beginning of our yearlong celebration of this essential genre of music.”

Beyoncé Breaks Record for Most Grammy Victories of All Time

Beyoncé has set a new record for most Grammy Award wins of all time. Following victories for Best Dance/Electronic Recording, Best Traditional R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song at the 2023 Grammys, the superstar took home the award for Best Dance/Electronic Album for Renaissance, surpassing the conductor Georg Solti with a total of 32 wins.

“I’m trying not to be too emotional. I’m trying to just receive this night,” Beyoncé said in her acceptance speech, thanking her late uncle, her parents, Jay-Z, and her children for their support. She added, “I’d like to thank the queer community for your love and for inventing this genre. God bless you, thank you so much to the Grammys.”

Beyoncé led this year’s Grammy nominations with nine total, including for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. She’s also tied with Jay-Z for most nominations in Grammys history with 88 total. Check out the full list of 2023 Grammy nominees and winners here.

Kendrick Lamar Wins Best Rap Album for ‘Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers’ at 2023 Grammys

Kendrick Lamar took home the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album with Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers. The rapper beat out Pusha T’s It’s Almost Dry, Jack Harlow’s Come Home the Kids Miss You, Future’s I Never Liked You, and DJ Khaled’s God Did.

“Thanks to my family for giving me the courage to share my vulnerability,” Lamar said during his acceptance speech at the Crypto.com Arena.

Jack Antonoff has won the Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical for the second year in a row. He was up against Boi-1da, Dahi, the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, and Dernst “D’Mile” Emile II. The producer was recognized for his work on Florence and the Machine’s Dance Fever, the Minions: The Rise of Gru soundtrack, Taylor Swift’s ‘All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault)’, Diana Ross’ ‘I Still Believe’, and the 1975’s ‘Part of the Band’. This is Antonoff’s fourth consecutive nomination in the category. His credits on Taylor Swift’s Midnights and the 1975’s Being Funny in a Foreign Language qualify for next year’s awards.

Tobias Jesso Jr. has received the first-ever Grammy Award for Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical, beating out The-Dream, Amy Allen, Laura Veltz, and Nija Charles.
