Interview: Andrius Mamontovas

Andrius Mamontovas is one the biggest Lithuanian musicians, having co-formed the band Foje in 1983, he has maintained a successful solo career away from the success of Foje. Outside of music he is also an actor having acted in films like Hong Kong Confidential (2010) and Loss (2008). Besides film Andrius has had a great career in theatre most notably for his role as Hamlet. This is our interview with Andrius.

Hello! How are you?
Just back from Berlin. I was there for Superbooth’17, because I love synthesizers and drum machines.

So, what is culture like in Lithuania at this moment of time?
I’m not sure if musician is the right person to answer that question. I usually play concerts at the same date, when my colleagues are playing theirs, so I don’t get to see much. In general, we’re still looking for our identity. Lithuania has been isolated from the World for 50 years in USSR, so we’re still in the faze of copying everything western. Smaller towns are struggling to have more culture, but in Vilnius, Kaunas or Klaipėda you can have a menu, that gives you quiet enough to choose from.

When did you realise you wanted to be a musician?
Probably in my very early years. But I finally decided to walk that path when I was around 25-26.

If you could choose any song from any artist to be yours what song would it be and why?
Leonard Cohen “Halleluja”.

Do you have a favourite genre of film?
I was big horror movie fan. Now any genre is good to me, if there’s a great story, good acting, humour and memorable punch lines in the film.

If you could give any advice to a new musician what would it be?
Write a good song and all the doors will open.

Is there any certain personal rules you live by?
If you’re thinking of doing something, you will have to lie about – don’t.

If you could be reborn into any animal? What kind of animal would you be?
Human.

Describe yourself in one word.
Silly.

What is your definition of culture?
It’s an emotional environment, we’re living in.

Akiva Goldsman to direct Firestarter remake

The script writer of Academy award winning A Beautiful Mind (2001) Akiva Goldsman is set to direct the Firestarter remake.

The 1984 version of the film based on Stephen King’s novel was directed by Mark L. Lester but never became a major success, thus now it looks like Akiva Goldsman has a chance to build and improve on its predecessor.

‘The Godfather’ cast members reunite at Tribeca Film Festival

Cast & Crew of The Godfather meet again

Cast members of “The Godfather” movies were reunited in Manhattan at the Tribeca Film Festival. It has been nearly 45 years since the critically-acclaimed “The Godfather” came out. Some of the stars that attended were the director Francis Coppola and cast such as Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, James Caan, Diane Keaton and Talia Shir.

The event took around nine hours, which made it for a long day for everyone. The cast spoke about their humble beginnings and the great success movie gained them. At the time of the original movie Coppola was still a young and unknown director, most did not know how good he will be. Al Pacino was still an unknown theatre actor that many had doubts about his ability. Whereas even the best-selling book that was written by Mario Puzo was not considered to be something that can make good cinema.

Review: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

The 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy was a major success. It had great humour, great music and a good storyline. Everything put together about the film seemed good. Now, the second film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 did not exactly live up to the expectation.

First, the film was a tad too long. I would argue that the film could have been cut down by a good 20-30 minutes, to save us from those moments where we want the film to fast-forward. So many throw away scenes and shots that did not really need to be there. One of my bigger criticisms of the film is that it should have had less focus on all the characters. I feel as much as it is Guardians and not Guardian, the attempt to cover all emotions and feelings from all characters carried the film away from the bits that make it so great such as the funny little moments that the characters have between each other. Therefore, I think the film should have been more compact in the range of character stories it is trying to tell as it becomes a bit dull by the end of it.

The success of the film really has to go down to the comedy. The character of Drax played by the ex WWE star Dave Bautista really delivers that throughout, which for me is still odd as he doesn’t seem like the type of actor that could do that. Meanwhile, the rest of the ensemble have their moments in the film where they really make the audience chuckle. I would say the film had pretty good amount of quality comedic moments, which most films that are comedies lack these days.

Furthermore, I would say the music chosen really did its job well. It is not easy to top the first film’s playlist but I feel this feel lived up to that. I enjoyed the vast range of music chosen for the film just as much as I did in the first from Mr. Blue Sky to Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain the playlist was lively and fitted the film rather well.

Overall, I feel the film delivered. If I had to describe the film I would say it is “pretty good”. Good as the first? Probably not. Much worse? Definitely not.

Interview: Marlow London

Marlow London is a British fashion label that focuses on contemporary luxury accessories of highest quality and craftmanship. The label is run by Central Saint Martins graduate Chloe Marlow who has founded Marlow London in 2016. Her goal is to challenge the consumers vision of what is luxury and to expand the world of luxury accessories by adding her own vision through her designs. This is our interview with Chloe from Marlow London.

Hello, how are you?
Fabulous! Thank you.

So, how did Marlow London start?
It really began in my final year at Central Saint Martins. My final year project was based around consumer consumption and I wanted to create a shopping bag as my final piece alongside provocative silk scarves. I began taking weekend classes at a handbag studio who hired me when I graduated.

After university I carried on learning and was apprenticing with emerging designers soaking up their knowledge and learning from their experiences. A year after graduating I decided I was ready to take the plunge and build a collection around the concept and designs I had been working on at university.

How long does it take to design something from scratch?
Designing takes no time at all! It’s the development that can take me weeks or months. Scarves are very simple, for me designing prints is like eating or sleeping; it comes naturally. Bags on the other hand don’t come as naturally and I probably have a very different approach to designing them than most accessory designers. So much has to be taken into consideration including practicality and longevity. I work with a fantastic talented team of artisans who guide me.

Do you have a favourite thing you designed?
The ‘This Bag’ collection is my favourite. I defines everything that Marlow London is about. It’s the merge between art and fashion. It’s a literal fashion statement.

What is your key focus when designing something new?
To produce something that I am proud of in terms of concept and quality and something I that I’d love to wear myself.

If you could give any advice for a person that wants to go into fashion design what would it be?
Fashion is subjective, don’t let other’s judgements sway your direction and believe in what you produce. If you don’t who will?

Describe your work in one word.
Expressive

Describe yourself in one word.
Passionate

How would you define culture?
To me culture is our surroundings. It’s the posters we walk past, the music we listen to, the latest trends and hype. It’s the people that surround us.
