Joni Mitchell Announces Archive Series, Unveils First Known Recording

0

Joni Mitchell is launching a massive series of archival releases. The first installment, Joni Mitchell Archives Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963 – 1967), arrives on October 30. The five-disc Early Years box set covers the years before the singer-songwriter released her 1968 debut album Song to a Seagull.

Containing six hours of unreleased home, live and radio recordings, the collection will feature 29 unreleased songs as well as various covers, a 40-page booklet with photographs, liner notes that include conversations between Joni Mitchell and Cameron Crowe, and more. The two live performances included in the box set — live at CFQX AM radio station in 1963 and at Canterbury House in 1967 — will also be available to purchase separately.

“The early stuff, I shouldn’t be such a snob against it,” she said in a press release. “A lot of these songs, I just lost them. They fell away. They only exist in these recordings. For so long I rebelled against the term, ‘I was never a folksinger.’ I would get pissed off if they put that label on me. I didn’t think it was a good description of what I was. And then I listened and… it was beautiful. It made me forgive my beginnings. And I had this realization… I was a folksinger!”

Mitchell has also unveiled what is billed as her first known recording, a cover of ‘House of the Rising Sun’ that was recorded in 1963, when she was 19 years old. Listen to it below, and scroll down for the box set’s tracklist.

Albums Out Today: Doves, The Flaming Lips, Marilyn Manson, Jouska

0

In this segment, we showcase the most notable albums out each week. Here are the albums out on September 11th, 2020:

Doves, The Universal Want

Doves are back with their first album in over a decade, The Universal Want, via IMPERIAL/Virgin EMI. It marks the UK rock trio’s fifth full-length album and the follow-up to 2009’s Kingdom of Rust. Containing 10 tracks, it was recorded at the band’s Frank Bough Sound III studios in the UK and was produced by Doves alongside Dan Austin. Speaking to At the Barrier about the recording process, drummer Andy Williams said that there was “an appreciation of what all three of us brought to the band originally,” adding, “We missed writing together and we also gave each other more room. If someone wasn’t feeling great one day we’d reconvene at a later date whereas during Kingdom of Rust we were working solidly day-to-day; clocking in. It was quite militant. We’ve always had a strong work ethic but this time it was different because of the way we gave each other space if they weren’t feeling it.”

The Flaming Lips, American Head

The Flaming Lips have come through with their sixteenth studio album, American Head, via Warner. Produced by longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann, the 13-track LP features guest vocals from singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves on two tracks, ‘Flowers of Neptune 6’ and ‘God and the Policeman’. “The music and songs that make up the AMERICAN HEAD album are based in a feeling,” frontman Wayne Coyne explained in a statement. “A feeling that, I think, can only be expressed through music and songs. We were, while creating it, trying to NOT hear it as sounds… but to feel it. Mother’s sacrifice, Father’s intensity, Brother’s insanity, Sister’s rebellion…. I can’t quite put it into words.”

Marilyn Manson, WE ARE CHAOS

Marilyn Manson has returned with a new album titled WE ARE CHAOS, out now via Loma Vista. Co-produced by Manson and Shooter Jennings, the shock-rocker’s latest marks his 11th studio album and the follow-up to 2017’s Heaven Upside Down. “This concept album is the mirror Shooter and I built for the listener — it’s the one we won’t stare into,” Manson explained in a press release. “There are so many rooms, closets, safes and drawers. But in the soul or your museum of memories, the worst are always the mirrors. Shards and slivers of ghosts haunted my hands when I wrote most of these lyrics. Making this record, I had to think to myself: ‘Tame your crazy, stitch your suit. And try to pretend that you are not an animal’ but I knew that mankind is the worst of them all. Making mercy is like making murder. Tears are the human body’s largest export.”

Jouska, Everything is Good

Oslo-based duo Jouska, composed of Marit Othilie Thorvik and Hans Olav Settem, have released their debut album Everything Is Good. Influenced by the likes of The Internet, Grimes, and Little Dragon, the 9-track LP features productions from Sassy 009 and explores subjects such as isolation, mental illness, and toxic relationships. Speaking about the evolution of their songwriting process, they told us back in March: “It used to be more about the instrumentation. It would start out with instrumental ideas, and then we created vocals and lyrics that would match these ideas. But in the last year, songwriting and vocal production has gotten more important to us. Now it’s more about telling a story and creating a unique vocal narrative for the listener to follow.”

Other albums out today:

Mastodon, Medium Rarities; Everything Everything, Re-Animator; Conway The Machine, From King To A GOD; Jeremy Gara, Passerine Finale.

3 Movies That Will Inspire You To Travel More

Many of us are inspired by what we see in the movies.

A good rom-com can inspire us to never give up on finding the man or woman of our dreams. An uplifting movie will give us the sense that anything is possible. And a rousing true story can give us hope to carry on in our personal battles, even when the odds seem against us.

Then there are those movies that can encourage us to travel more, or even limo services like BBZ Limo. After witnessing the journeys of our favorite actors and actresses on screen, we can be motivated to follow their example. Whether we travel light with a minimalist backpack and little else but the shoes on our feet or load up our cars for an epic road trip with our family and friends, we can experience the adventures that we have seen on screen. Or if you’re looking for a great limo service, check out https://www.limofind.com/tx/el-paso-limo-service/

Here are the movies that will inspire you to travel more.

#1: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Walter Mitty is a bit of a dreamer, always imagining the adventures he could go on while never actually getting anywhere. This changes when he is one day encouraged to step out of his comfort zone for the sake of his career, and he journeys to such stunning places as Greenland and Iceland on his personal mission.

Ben Stiller plays the lead, and he’s as warm and winning as ever in the role. The film is inspirational, not just because it encourages us to explore the beauty of the places he visits, but because we feel motivated to step out of our own comfort zones. We can all daydream but do nothing to bring them into reality. The film inspires us to grasp the opportunity to travel and to make our bucket list dreams come true.

#2: Raiders Of The Lost Ark

In Steven Spielberg’s classic movie, Indiana Jones tours the world on his quest to find the Ark of the Covenant. From the jungles of Peru to the deserts of Egypt, he battles the Nazis, swings across giant chasms, and overcomes his personal fear of snakes! It’s a rip-roaring adventure and one that can inspire us.

After all, how many times have you wanted to have an adventure of your own? While we wouldn’t recommend venturing into pits filled with deadly traps, we would recommend a vacation exploring the temples of Peru in search of lost treasure. You could also visit one of these other Indiana Jones locations and scale rope bridges in Sri Lanka, board a raft on the Tuolumne River, or camel ride across the deserts of Tunisia.

National Lampoon’s European Vacation

Chevy Chase is the head of the Griswold family and he leads his family on the European trip of a lifetime. It’s a pretty funny comedy, and typically involves Clark and his kin getting into all kinds of trouble and offending all kinds of people along the way.

Why is it inspirational? Well, for two reasons. One, the Griswolds get to visit famous landmarks around London, Paris, Italy, and Germany, and you might be encouraged to visit them too. And secondly, despite the usual family fallings out, the Griswolds do start to bond together. That could be your incentive for your own European road trip with the people that are closest to you.

Thanks for reading and happy traveling!

Artist Spotlight: PYNKIE

Nurse by day and music maker by night, New Jersey based Lindsey Radice aka PYNKIE has had a more bizarre album making experience than most. Trying to put the finishing touches on her sophomore album #37 wasn’t quite the way she envisioned it, having had to focus on being a front line worker throughout the pandemic. #37 follows her 2018 debut album neoteny, which introduced listeners to the whimsical, nostalgic and razor sharp world of PYNKIE. Playing like a 90’s infused, delightfully off kilter indie pop gem, PYNKIEs music possesses a warmth stemming from the sunny, warped guitars: on tracks like ‘Shrinking Violet’, we see these guitars at the forefront with simple riffs laid over one another in a way that’s innately soothing, while on crowd favourite ‘Dew ♥️’ we hear the track flex itself outwards, spreading its slacker goodness in a way that has Mac Demarco quaking. Her 2019 single ‘Funny Boy’ showcased PYNKIE’s penchant for inflecting her music with personal touches, using clips from South Park and Rocko’s Modern Life to accentuate the track. PYNKIE plays jingly guitar music that’s wonderfully orchestrated by Radice’s voice, which is beautifully dreamy, husky in places with the occasional do wop edge, rendering her sound wistful and sepia-toned. It evokes a feeling, more than anything, one of frivolity and snark, like a chewy sweet with a tangy centre; PYNKIE’s world is one of insatiable charm and infectious fun.

We caught up with PYNKIE for this edition of our Artist Spotlight series, where we showcase up-and-coming artists and give them a chance to talk about their music.

The inescapable question; how has lockdown treated you? Being a nurse it must be pretty intense, how did you balance that with music making, finishing the album and generally keeping your head up?

Lockdown wasn’t the worst thing in the world for me because THANKFULLY I started being with my bf/bff (John) shortly beforehand and was able to quarantine with him 🙂 He’s also the keyboard/synth player in my band & on the #37 tracks! We make music together separate from my stuff too ❤️

Being a nurse WAS crazy for a lil bit there… Normally I work on an “ortho/neuro” floor which (mostly) deals with people who just had any kind of bone or nervous system surgery (like knee, hip, shoulder, spine, brain, etc). But when Covid happened, we had to convert my floor into an extension of the ICU and I had to float to different floors dealing solely with Covid patients 👀  That was craziness… but thankfully only lasted maybe a lil over 2 months! Things in my hospital have been back to “normal” since mid-June-ish.

If you were to try and summarise your sound into a few sentences, what would those sentences be?

Hmmm 🧐  That’s a toughy… maybe: Music to listen to while walking around a cemetery on a sunny day; sounds for daydreaming about that cutie; feel-good songs that often contain contrastingly sad lyrics lol

What’s the main drive for you to create music, is it something that you’ve always been immersed in since a child or have you discovered it as an outlet as you’ve grown?

I’ve only been writing my own music since like 18 years old, when I was a freshman in college and my friend in my dorm (Aaron) showed me how to use this free recording software (Audacity) & let me use his Blue Snowball USB mic.

But I did always love music! Luckily both of my parents had good taste, so I was exposed to lots of cool stuff from a young age. I remember always falling into deep daydreams and becoming totally immersed in songs (especially while looking out the window during car rides)!

This is your second album, were there any differences you noticed between your approach to making #37 compared to neoteny?

Yes! They’re both all over the place with each song recorded differently Haha… but #37 was actually mixed & mastered by pros, which I’ve never had done before!

What would you say were your major influences both musical and otherwise? Your entire vibe is sort of sardonic yet frivolous; it’s pure fun and self assurance without coming across as mocking or nihilistic. Do you think that comes from the culmination of these influences or is that a reflection of how you navigate the world?

Wow! Had to look up what sardonic meant haha but love that description 👀 & I wouldn’t say I have any direct/intentional influences for any of it 🤔  but the different vibes throughout the album are probably a product of me always listening to my “saved” Spotify songs on shuffle. These all consist of like 90s alternative, ambient, pop, classical, bossanova, hiphop beats, jazz, indie, old country/bluesy stuff, dreamy, electronic, emo-ish, idk what! So what I make is prob a weird combination of whatever elements I subconsciously take from all of that 🤔  Don’t get me wrong, I also love listening to albums in full! My fav is Copacetic by Velocity Girl 🙂

I also do have a generally positive outlook on life, even though lots of shitty shit happens in the world all the time. I still find life to be like a crazy sci-fi movie with endless possibilities (especially since I’ve been haunted by ghosts and/or demons in the past 👀 but that’s a story for another time…)

When you set out to make #37, did you have a specific vision or sound in mind? Was there a kind of narrative that you built the album around or did it come to fruition more sporadically and organically?

I’ve yet to make an album with a specific vision/sound in mind ahead of time (although that is a goal of mine). They’ve both just been compilations of songs made over long periods of time that somehow go together (kinda)!

However, the number 37 was evvverywhere during the making of the album! So that was one constant… For instance, it would coincidentally be the volume level of something or the number on random faders like right/left, wet/dry, etc… and it was on seemingly every license plate on my way to and from the studio and some random sheet music book in the studio was (not purposely) opened to page 37 for the longest time + so many more examples! But I’ll stop ranting now haha.

Are there one or two tracks on the album that are personal favourites? I know it’s probably like asking what your favourite child or plant baby is, but still, is there a specific track that has a really special place in your heart for whatever reason?

Yes! My personal favvv on the album is ‘Sunday Drivin’ ❤️ I just love the way it was recorded and feel like it’s most pleasing to the ears ~ It’s full of cool synth sounds/samples/hidden noises like church bells & sirens (aka stuff you might vaguely hear through your loud music while driving around aimlessly, which is one of my fav things to do!)

Are there any more collaborations in the pipeline following your feature on Social Media’s track ‘unbelievable’? Anyone you’d love to collaborate with?

That’s actually my bf (John) who I mentioned in the answer to the first question! He makes suuuch cool stuff even though he’s barely ever put anything out.. But we started cookin’ up songs like ‘unbelievable’ during quarantine and will eventually put out an EP called Pensacola 🙂

That one actually will be a concept album, which I mentioned earlier I’ve never really done before 👀 ~ All the songs are supposed to make you feel like you’re on that other-worldly island Jodie Foster travels to through a wormhole in the movie “Contact” ! The island is actually a simulation of Pensacola, FL generated from her memories 👀 You should def watch it!

PYNKIE’s latest single ‘Love Theme’ from her sophomore album #37 will be released on September 15th. The full album is due out October 16th and is available to preorder here.

Watch Phoebe Bridgers Perform on NPR’s ‘Tiny Desk (Home) Concert’

Phoebe Bridgers is the latest artist to perform on NPR’s remote edition of the Tiny Desk Concert series. Joined by drummer Marshall Vore and guitarist Harrison Whitford against a green-screened White House background, Bridgers performed three tracks from her most recent studio album, Punisher: ‘Kyoto’, ‘Moon Song’, and ‘I Know the End’. Check out the performance below.

“I hope everybody’s enjoying their apocalypse,” Bridgers said before jumping into ‘I Know the End’, which sees the trio expanding into an ensemble and accompanied by recordings of dozens of fans screaming along to the chorus.

The singer-songwriter has appeared multiple times on the show: her first performance was in 2017, following the release of her debut LP, Stranger in the Alps. She came back a year later to perform alongside Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker as boygenius, and again just a few months months later with Conor Oberst as Better Oblivion Community Center.

Earlier this week, Bridgers teamed up with Arlo Parks for a live cover of Radiohead’s ‘Fake Plastic Trees’.

“I wrote ‘One More Second’ with Matt Sheehy (Lost Lander, EL VY) with the intention for it to be a kind of answer to Dolly Parton’s ‘I Will Always Love You’, or sort of the other side of that conversation,” Berninger explained in a statement. “I just wanted to write one of those classic, simple, desperate love songs that sound great in your car.”

Sylvan Esso have previewed their upcoming album Free Love with a third single titled ‘Frequency’. It’s accompanied music video directed by the group’s friend and collaborator Moses Sumney and choreographed by Stewart/Owen Dance. Check it out below.

“We had a fantastic and rewarding time collaborating with our friend and fellow North Carolinian, Moses Sumney, on building a visual world for ‘Frequency’,” Sylvan Esso said in a statement. “He had such a beautiful vision for the project, one that ran parallel to the song’s initial source in a way that showed us new spaces it could inhabit. It’s a beautiful exploration of being together and apart at the same time—we feel it rings clearly in this moment.”

Free Love arrives on September 25 via Loma Vista. It includes the previously released singles ‘Ferris Wheel’ and ‘Rooftop Dancing’.
