Singer-songwriter Cass McCombs and San Francisco-based preschool teacher Mr. Greg (aka Greg Gardner) have shared ‘Friends From Around the World (Hello Version)’, which appears on their upcoming LP Mr. Greg & Cass McCombs Sing and Play New Folk Songs for Children. The collection contains songs Garnder wrote for his own students, with arrangements by McCombs. Listen to the new track, which features vocals from Michael Hurley as well as Gardner’s daughter, below.

“In ‘Friends From All Around The World,’ my daughter returns each greeting (listeners are welcome to do the same) and sends a special hello to Boone and Jocko, characters that live in many of Michael Hurley’s songs and illustrations,” Gardner explained in a statement. “There’s even a special hello from our family cat. Listen carefully for the meow.”

Mr. Greg & Cass McCombs Sing and Play New Folk Songs for Children is out August 18 via Smithsonian Folkways.

superviolet Unveils New Single ‘Waver’

superviolet, the project led by former the Sidekicks frontman Steven Ciolek, has shared a new single called ‘Waver’. Following his recently released debut album, Infinite Spring, the track arrives ahead of the first-ever superviolet tour, which kicks off next week. Listen to ‘Waver’ below.

“‘Waver’ is an ode to indecisiveness, tracked during the sessions for Infinite Spring,” Ciolek explained in a statement. “It stems from the feeling that, particularly for people like me who can spend all day weighing a decision, you constantly are at odds with the passing of time. That’s to say, the world isn’t going to stop for you to find that perfect piece of fruit at the store, or the perfect EQ boost on a mix, or the ideal word to say how you are feeling. Inevitably, the clock will win. It will win in a deciding fashion. To spell out the reference in the song: Muhammad Ali is the clock and you are Chuck Wepner. Really all you can do is celebrate the fact that you stayed in the ring.”

Jobber Release New Song ‘Summerslam’

Jobber have dropped a new single called ‘Summerslam’. Out now via Exploding in Sound, the track arrives just days before its wrestling event namesake. Check it out below.

“‘Summerslam’ is the first Jobber song that really resembles the heavy rock I used to hear growing up when WWF was at its peak,” vocalist/guitarist Kate Meizner explained in a statement. “I wrote the Helmet-inspired bass line and main riff a while ago, not sure if it would see the light of day; it didn’t seem to fit with the other Jobber songs at the time. After I showed it to Mike, he made a demo with a couple more parts completed that brought the song to life. We ended up co-writing the rest, focusing on making it catchy but also heavy with some over-the-top excess, like something from a WWF-era Summerslam commercial or in the background of WCW Beach Brawl ‘99. Thematically the song is about people who enter positions of political power and become jaded, going through motions only to lose touch with how their actions impact real human lives.”

Last year, Jobber released their debut EP, Hell in a Cell, which made our best EPs of 2022 list.

Will Butler + Sister Squares Share New Single ‘Arrow of Time’

Will Butler + Sister Squares have released a new single from their upcoming self-titled album, ‘Arrow of Time’. It follows the previously shared track ‘Long Grass’. Listen below.

“People really liked this when we played it; a few people at the merch table were like, ‘Which record is this song on?’” Butler said of the new song, which was inspired by A Brief History of Time. “Hawking describes the concept, in paraphrase, as ‘you might see a teacup fall off a table and smash into bits, but you never see the bits come back together. Or if you did, you would instantly be aware that time is running backwards.’ Lyrically, I feel like I was maybe trying to write a Pixies song about that idea — ‘Here comes your man,’ but instead of something coming, it’s just everything slowly dissolving into heat energy.”

Will Butler + Sister Squares comes out September 22 on Merge Records.

Lizzo Responds to Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Allegations: “Too Outrageous Not to Be Addressed”

Lizzo has responded to the sexual harassment and discrimination allegations made against her and her production company by three of her former dancers. The dancers –Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez – filed a lawsuit against Lizzo, her Big Grrl Big Touring production company, and her dance captain Shirlene Quigley this week, accusing them of false imprisonment, body shaming, and sexual, racial, and religious harassment, among other charges. In a statement posted on social media, Lizzo described the allegations as “false,” “sensationalized,” and “too outrageous not to be addressed.”

“I am not here to be looked at as a victim, but I also know that I am not the villain that people and the media have portrayed me to be these last few days,” she wrote. “I am very open with my sexuality and expressing myself but I cannot accept or allow people to use that openness to make me out to be something I am not. There is nothing I take more seriously than the respect we deserve as women in the world. I know what it feels like to be body shamed on a daily basis and would absolutely never criticize or terminate an employee because of their weight. I’m hurt but I will not let the good work I’ve done in the world be overshadowed by this. I want to thank everyone who has reached out in support to lift me up during this difficult time.” Read the complete statement below.

The dancers’ attorney Ron Zambrano said in a statement: “The stunning nature of how Lizzo and her management team treated their performers seems to go against everything Lizzo stands for publicly, while privately she weight-shames her dancers and demeans them in ways that are not only illegal but absolutely demoralizing.”

Empty Country Announce New Album, Share New Single ‘Erlking’

Empty Country – the project of former Cymbals Eat Guitars leader Joseph D’Agostino – have announced Empty Country II, the follow-up to their 2020 self-titled LP. The album was recorded over two weeks at R.E.M. producer Mitch Easter’s studio Fidelitorium in Kernersville, North Carolina. It’s set to arrive on November 3 via Tough Love/Get Better Records. Check out the lead single ‘Erlking’ and find the album cover and tracklist below.

“‘Erlking’ takes its name from ‘Erlkönig’ Goethe’s famous poem depicting the death of a child stalked by a supernatural being,” D’Agostino explained in a statement. “Though I wrote this song on the day of the Robb Elementary school shooting in Uvalde, the ’20 kids’ referenced are the Sandy Hook children. In the parallel version of the American dystopia I depict in Empty Country II, Erlkings are ultraterrestrial demons that stalk the innocent and infect the minds of men. These entities’ lives span eons. To them, the whole of our country’s pernicious history is as brief as a Chopin prelude or a TV jingle. One short verse/ 13 Bars/ The force of 50 collapsing stars.”

Sheer Mag Sign to Third Man Records, Share New Single ‘All Lined Up’

Sheer Mag have signed to Third Man Records, celebrating the news with a standalone single called ‘All Lined Up’. The track arrives with an accompanying video from director Matt Palmer. Check it out below.

“The genesis of ‘All Lined Up’ stems from late nights at the bar playing pool,” the band explaine in a statement. “Last call has long come and gone, the gate is down, the ashtrays are out and your friend behind the bar is giving it all away. Despite the revelry, there’s a looming sense of dread—a fear that no matter how far ahead you get, all it takes is one bad shot to lose the game.”

Third Man Records will also be physically and digitally re-releasing the entirety of Sheer Mag’s back catalogue, including their early string of EPs – 2014’s I, 2015’s II, and 2016’s III – as well as their two LPs, 2017’s Need to Feel Your Love and 2019’s A Distant Call.

“Having been aware of Sheer Mag since their earliest 7-inch singles and keeping up with their self-released, independent DIY take-no-prisoners ethos, I never envisioned a world where they would ever sign to a record label,” Third Man Records’ Ben Blackwell commented. “So imagine how ecstatic we were at Third Man when the band reached out to us directly and asked if we’d be interested in partnering with them. Still doesn’t seem real. We are beyond honored, humbled really, to receive their handshake and their trust. This is gonna be fun as shit.”

Hinako Omori Announces New Album ‘stillness, softness…’, Unveils New Song ‘cyanotype memories’

Hinako Omori has announced her new LP stillness, softness…, sharing the new single ‘cyanotype memories’ in tandem with the news. The follow-up to 2022’s a journey… is due for release October 27 through Houndstooth. Thomas Harrington Rawle and Cathal Mckeon directed the video for ‘cyanotpe memories’, which features contemporary dancer Chihiro Kawasaki. Check it out and find the album’s cover art (created by Emi Takahashi) and tracklist below.

‘cyanotype memories’ is “about reconnecting and returning to our inner stillness, and surrendering to the unknown,” according to Omori. “We ultimately don’t have control over how anything external might pan out, but when we trust our inner compass things seem to be revealed to us in the most beautiful and unexpected way.”

“I was also fascinated by the idea of cyanotype printing,” she continued. “The act of placing an object on paper, and exposing it to UV light – the longer the object is focused under the light, a stronger or more detailed image can form on the paper. I thought there was a similarity in focusing and redirecting our thoughts to create new neural pathways in our brains, with the repetition of these thoughts creating stronger paths.”

Of the accompanying visual, Harrington Rawle added: “I’ve worked with Hinako on her live visuals a few times and we wanted to further extend that world in collaboration with Chihiro Kawasaki. Hinako and I discussed the idea exploring silhouettes through dance and post processing FX, creating a void atmosphere that is revealed only through thin bolts of light – Chihiro improvised to the lights which were programmed live by Richard Brade.”

stillness, softness… includes the previously unveiled singles ‘foundation’ and ‘in full bloom’.

Muncie Girls Break Up, Announce Farewell Tour

Muncie Girls have announced that they are calling it quits. The Exeter trio has also confirmed plans for a farewell tour, which includes shows in Brighton, London, Bristol, and Manchester. See the list of dates below.

“After nearly 13 years, a demo CD, a demo tape, three 12” EPs, three 7” singles, a 12” split record and two albums, we’re saying goodbye to our band Muncie Girls,” vocalist/guitarist Lande Hekt said in a statement, continuing:

We started this band when we were 17 and the biggest goal we could muster up was to release a 7” single. We ended up doing more things and going to more places than we could ever have imagined. We were lucky to be from a town with such a brilliant music scene and venue, the Cavern, and I remember how it felt to travel to so many cities and discover other scenes just like ours.

The community we found ourselves a part of was so special and really became our lives. If it weren’t for the kindness of total strangers putting on shows for us, feeding us and letting us stay at their houses, we would never have been able to do any of the things that we’ve done. We were even once temporarily adopted by a family in Texas when we went to play SXSW and they baked us cherry pie and drove us to our gigs. We were taken on a tour around Australia by complete strangers who became some of our best friends. We went to Japan after some strangers offered to book us a tour and we travelled around on trains and borrowed local bands’ gear, guitars, everything. We spent most of our time touring in mainland Europe where we made friends for life, playing in squats, venues, gardens, bunkers, wherever.”

I often heard stories of bands having to sleep in their vans or in parks or service stations. We always had somewhere to stay, no one ever let us sleep rough. I know we were incredibly lucky and we have our scene and our friends and fans to thank for that. We’ve relied so much on people’s kindness; I hope that we were always grateful enough.”

“We’ve decided to do a farewell tour and we hope that you’ll join us at a show. Muncie Girls will always be a massive part of our lives and we will each always play music, just in different projects now. Thank you everyone!

Muncie Girls’ debut album, From Caplan to Belsize, came out in 2016, and was followed in 2018 by Fixed Ideals. Hekt has since put out two solo records, 2021’s Going to Hell and last year’s House Without a View. Revisit our Artist Spotlight interview with Lande Hekt.
