Albums Out Today: Bartees Strange, BLACKPINK, 21 Savage & Metro Boomin, Jónsi

0

In this segment, we showcase the most notable albums out each week. Here are the albums out on October 2nd, 2020:

Bartees Strange, Live Forever

Bartees Strange has come through with his debut studio album, Live Forever, out now via Memory Music. Following this year’s National covers EP Say Goodbye to Pretty Boy, the album was mastered by Will Yip and includes the previously released singles ‘Boomer’, ‘Mustang’, and ‘Kelly Rowland’. Recorded in upstate New York, the album is largely based on his experiences as a black man growing up and playing in bands in Mustang, Oklahoma. “I’m often the only black guy in the room when I’m playing in a band or working in a studio, and I’ll be honest, I don’t think the engineer always knew what I wanted to capture, what I was trying to do, or what I was referencing,” he explained in a statement. “I wanted a space where I could be in control of how it was gonna sound and have people there to check me that I trust.”

BLACKPINK, The Album

BLACKPINK have dropped their highly-anticipated second album and first Korean-language LP, The Album, via YG Entertainment/Interscope. It marks the quartet’s first Korean release since the 2019 EP Kill This Love and includes the previously unveiled singles ‘How You Like That’ and ‘Ice Cream’. “We tried to put more colors into our music, say black and pink,” the group’s Lisa told GRAMMY. “I wish each member has a stronger presence on the stage and explores more various genres. I hope people don’t know what to expect from us, except for something better than before. We want to be unpredictable.” Rosé added: “We had mixed feelings, but overall it was very positive vibes, and we were very stoked to be able to finally release the full album.”

21 Savage & Metro Boomin, Savage Mode II

21 Savage and producer Metro Boomin have once again joined forces for the long-awaited follow-up to Savage Mode. The collaborative effort was announced earlier this week with a trailer narrated by Morgan Freeman. “‘Savage’ is defined as ‘fierce, beastly and untamed.’,” the actor intoned. “‘Mode’ is defined as ‘a way of operating or using the system.’ So to be in ‘savage mode’ is to go hard, not allowing anything to stop or deter you from your mission. Basically, this means when someone is in ‘savage mode,’ they’re not to be fucked with.” The 15-track LP includes contributions from Drake, Young Thug, and Young Nudy.

Jónsi, Shiver

Sigur Rós singer Jónsi has released his first solo album in a decade. Shiver is out now via Krunk and includes the previously released singles ‘Cannibal’, ‘Exhale’, ‘Swill’, and ‘Salt Licorice’. Following his 2010 solo debut Go, the 11-track LP was co-produced by PC Music mastermind A.G. Cook and features guest contributions from Robyn and Cocteau Twins’ Liz Fraser. About working with Cook, Jónsi said: “We decided to work on one song together and see how it goes and it really worked. He stripped it down for me because when you’re doing everything yourself, you go a little bit crazy. He built the songs again from scratch.”

Other albums out today:

Drive-By Truckers, The New OK; Mariah Carey, The Rarities; Shamir, Shamir; YG, MY LIFE 4HUNNID; Corey Taylor, CMFT; Devonté Hynes, We Are Who We Are; Dolly Parton, A Holly Dolly Christmas.

Artist Spotlight: LUNA AURA

There’s a cathartic moment on LUNA AURA’s new EP, THREE CHEERS FOR THE AMERICAN BEAUTY: about halfway into the project’s riotously fun array of campy, guitar-fuelled rock songs, the singer-songwriter pauses for a split second on ‘TALKING TO ME’, then lets out a piercing scream. It’s a very familiar type of scream, one that AURA seems to have summoned directly from the 90s alternative scene that her recently-revamped sound and aesthetic pull from. Unsurprisingly, the LA-via-Phoenix native, born Angela Flores, cites acts like Hole and Garbage as some of the main influences for her new persona, and though she says her days as a self-proclaimed “alien pop star” are behind her (you won’t find any of her old music on streaming services), a lot of the infectious qualities of great pop music are still there. From the propulsive ‘CRASH DRIVE’ to the subversive ‘ENGLISH BOYS’ and the explosive closer ‘BABYDOLL’, THREE CHEERS is chock full of catchy riffs and empowering lyrics, each song introducing us to a different rebellious female character while exploring the societal pressures faced by young women in America today. LUNA AURA’s style may be deliberately nostalgic, but there’s an electrifying energy running through her music that makes it feel all the more urgent.

We caught up with LUNA AURA for this edition of our Artist Spotlight series, where we showcase up-and-coming artists and give them a chance to talk about their music.

What inspired you to start making music?

I felt very emotionally connected to music from an early age. I loved how it could make you cry, that it could make you feel lonely, loved, empowered. I had been singing most of my life and I started writing songs when I was about 10 years old. I’ve always had a passion for it, and it became very much a part of my identity early on in my life. I remember one of my first concerts I ever saw was Paramore on The Final Riot! Tour back when I was about 15. I just remember how electrifying it was to see Hayley Williams on stage absolutely murdering it. It was like fire rumbling in my chest, it made me want to cry. I had never felt that way about anything in my life, and that was when I knew this was something I wanted to chase.

Your songs draw a lot from the 90s alternative scene – what are some influences one might not expect while hearing your music?

I pulled a lot of inspiration for this EP from bands like Garbage, Hole, NIN, but I was exposed to a lot of different types of music growing up. I always felt drawn to the things that either told a really good story or did a great job of making me feel something deeply. I’m drawn to things like Rage Against the Machine for the emotional intensity and charged message but, in the same breath, I’m drawn to people like Lauryn Hill for her unique female perspective on life and her ability to tell a story. I wrote this EP in a time that I was finally starting to trust myself, lean into my confidence, and stop letting other people/things control me. I felt empowered, and I pulled a lot from the people who made me feel that way when I was young. I wanted to take what I had learned from them and weave in my own story.

Do you follow any specific process when it comes to writing songs?

I don’t have a specific working process that I go by every time I sit down to write. I really enjoy the spontaneity of not knowing where a song will start. Sometimes the music is already produced out and I just have to focus on lyrics and melody, and other times I’m starting with a bass and a click. I do love to start with the composition first if I’m starting a song from scratch because it’s easier to conceptualize a mood and melody when the music is there to set the tone. If we’re getting technical though, a little sparkling water and weed never hurts.

I’m curious about the meaning behind the title of your new EP.

I actually based the title of the EP off of the title of the film American Beauty. I love dark comedies, and I had been watching a lot more of them around the time I was writing this EP. Heathers, Jawbreaker, Sugar & Spice. I wanted to capture a campy aesthetic for this project, and that title just sounded so bitter and cheeky. It was a great base for the beauty pageant visuals as well. I was able to sort of create my own world that feels to me very much like the dark comedies I adore.

What were some of the ideas that went into the making of the EP?

I was writing from my own experience stepping into myself as both an artist and a woman. I was ridding myself of my conditioned self-image. I think culture and community are constantly interjecting into our lives to tell us what’s right and wrong, and what’s acceptable/not acceptable. Especially in the music industry. You have people telling you what to do and who to be on a daily basis. You end up shaping yourself to everyone else’s bullshit. Each song on this EP represents a different pressure that I’ve had to endure and how I was able to overcome it in my mind. I wanted the songs to feel intensely conversational and emotionally charged because that’s where my head was at that point in my life.

What’s the story behind that scream on ‘TALKING TO ME’?

That was my favorite part of making that song! To me ‘TALKING TO ME’ is the fight song of the EP. It’s the one I’m most proud of because that was really the moment that I realized what this project was. I had been tired of being mistreated and misunderstood in all aspects of my life. I was like half of a person, walking around letting other people decide what was best for me. It was unfulfilling and lonely. This song represents the moment I decided, no more. The scream was the release of tension that I had been holding onto up to that moment.

Is there anything you’re particularly looking forward to in the near future?

I’m looking forward to this release and continuing to release visuals that help bring this music to life. I’m also working on an interactive short story series that will work in tandem with the songs on the EP. Hoping to slowly but surely start releasing the stories next year, as well as more new music!

THREE CHEERS FOR THE AMERICAN BEAUTY is out October 2nd.

Gorillaz Enlist Elton John and 6LACK for New Song ‘The Pink Phantom’

Gorillaz have dropped a new song from their Song Machine series, titled ‘The Pink Phantom’. This one features Elton John and 6LACK and is set to appear on the upcoming Song Machine: Season One – Strange Timez albumCheck it out below, along with an accompanying Jamie Hewlett-directed video.

“Damon reached out and asked me to do something and the way the song has turned out is just great,” Elton John said in a statement. “I was in the studio in London and he was at the other end in Devon, but even remotely it was such an engaging and creative process. I’ve always loved Damon because he encompasses so many different sorts of music. He has his fingers in so many pies and although he’s achieved so much, he never sits still creatively. He’s constantly pushing forward and embracing the new, which is admirable and rare. He’s always working—he’s always doing something. He’s done so much to promote music from around the world, from Africa, from China, that people hadn’t previously heard and I really admire that. I’ve always been a Gorillaz fan anyway, so when he asked me to do a Gorillaz track—it was a no brainer. I’m so very, very happy that that’s come about.”

Gorillaz have been sharing singles in the Song Machine series since January, including collaborations with Robert Smith, SlowthaiPeter Hook, Georgia, OctavianSchoolboy Q, and more. Song Machine: Season 1 — Strange Timez arrives on October 23rd, and will also feature contributions from St. Vincent, Beck, EarthGang, CHAI, GoldLink, and others.

Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker Unveils New Song ‘dragon eyes’

0

Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker has released a new song called ‘dragon eyes’. It’s taken from her upcoming album songs, which is out on October 23 via 4AD along with an accompanying LP titled instrumentals. Listen to it below.

The double album was recorded in quarantine, inside a cabin in the mountains of western Massachusetts alongside engineer Philip Weinrobe. It comes with a digital free-vinyl recording, a.k.a. analog-analog-analog (AAA). “Not only does this process allow for a very specific type of sonic experience to come alive,” Weinrobe explained in a statement, “but the process also dictates how we work. The fine-toothed editing and micro-adjustments that every modern record relies on are not available. The computer screen is not glowing while the music is being recorded.”

He added: “The entire workflow becomes a part of the music in a way that is simply not possible when working in digital audio. AAA is a very labor and resource-intensive process and it has a wide array of limitations compared to digital record-making, but there is no other way we could have achieved both the capture and delivery of this music without it.”

‘dragon eyes’ follows the previously released ‘anything’.

Laura Jane Grace Surprise Releases New Solo Album ‘Stay Alive’

0

Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace has surprise released a new solo album called Stay Alive. It’s out now via Polyvinyl, while a physical release will be available on December 11 via Big Scary Monsters. The album was recorded between July 6 and 9 with Steve Albini at the producer’s iconic Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. Take a listen below.

“We came home from the Against Me! tour we were on in March, and right before we left, we had been in the studio working on songs, and I had been working on them for months prior,” Grace explained in a statement. “I sat around for a month-and-a-half at a home just being shell-shocked being like, ‘What the fuck happened and what the fuck is happening with the world?’ As I started to get my bearings, I just came to the realisation that waiting was going to kill the record and kill the songs. I spent two years working on all these songs, and the idea of throwing them away didn’t sit well with me. But then I was like, ‘What am I waiting for?’ All I have to do is adjust my scope. I can sit here on my fucking ass and do nothing, or I can work.”

She added: “I just want to put this out because it makes me feel alive and it’s giving me something better than sitting here losing my mind while the world falls apart. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about what you do. Just stay alive.”

Stay Alive marks the follow-up to Grace’s solo debut, 2018’s Bought to Rot, and her first for Polyvinyl.
