Interview: Caroline Duke

Swedish pop singer and songwriter Caroline Duke is one of the most exciting up and coming names.

With ambient raw-like vocals with a resemblence of Lana Del Rey she has created quite a profile for herself. This is our interview with her.

Hi, how are you?

I’m very good thanks! Happy it’s almost summer.

So, when did you decide to go into music making?

I’ve been writing music since I was eight years old, and I’ve written hundreds of songs since then. However it wasn’t until 3 years ago I actually had the courage to pursue it professionally. I came to a point where I decided that I don’t care anymore, I just want to get my music out there, regardless if it will be well received or not.

Who/what influences you to make music?

I’ve always loved making up stories, so I probably started writing songs for that reason. I mostly listen to metal like Rammstein and Tool so maybe that’s why my music has morphed into this dark pop genre. I find inspiration in so many things. I can write a song based on a word that I’ve read or a movie I’ve seen or inspiration from my own life.

If you could collaborate with any artist who would it be?

Trent Reznor without any hesitation. He’s a musical genius if you ask me, and a huge inspiration.

Describe yourself in one word.

Hmm that’s a tough one. But one of the words that come to mind is dedicated.

Describe your music in one word.

Romantic.

What are your goals for the rest of 2017?

I’m planning on making a music video this summer. I’m also planning on recording a sophomore EP that I will hopefully release in the beginning of 2018. The overall goal is just to get my music heard!

What is your definition of culture?

Culture is what makes us human. Culture is life. Interaction. It is really what makes this world such a fascinating place and makes life bearable.

Interview: Awon

Antwan Wiggins better known under his stage name Awon has been part of the Hip-Hop scene for over a decade and is the founder of Don’t Sleep Records.

From being the founder of Don’t Sleep Records to being promoted on some of the biggest music platforms today Awon has created quite a great discography under his name. This is our interview with him.

Hi, how are you?

Peace I’m doing well, how about yourself?

I’m very good thank you! So, what made you go into Hip-Hop?

Being born in the right place, at the right time. New York City was something in the 80s and that energy was driven by Hip Hop, at least for me. Having young parents helped too, my parents were very hip.

How did you come up with the name Awon?

I was going through a bunch of changes and stupid names and my cousin Jay Swift came up with it. It’s my name dropping the n and the t. We flipped the a to an O because it seems like A Won like winning.

What is your source of inspiration when making music?

Life, oldies, my experiences, my family, just living. I would like to add that I feed off the creative energy of others as well. So when someone makes dope art it makes me want to create.

Outside music do you have a hobby that you like to escape to?

I love my vinyl, digging in the crates, reading, cooking, and spending time with my family.

Describe yourself in one word.

Authentic

Describe your music in one word.

Soulful

If you could collaborate with any artist ever dead or alive who would it be and why?

Sun-Ra because he inspired most of my heroes. He was the original Afro futurist in my opinion.

Many artists try and get signed to a major record label however most don’t succeed and never find happiness in their work as they constantly follow trends to fit in. What advice would you give to them?

As my wife would say authenticity speaks. I would also ask would they like their legacy to be clouded by someone else’s shadow they stood in?

If you could give any advice for any aspiring musicians out there what would it be?

Stay the course, do not lose sight of your vision

What is your definition of culture?

A way of life we subscribe to.

I’m very well. It’s really hot in London right now. So I’m enjoying the sun!

So, how did the song shake the Room come about?

Shake the Room was produced by my good friend Lostboy. The song means a lot to me as I wrote it when I was struggling with my own confidence. It really is an anthem for self-confidence. It’s me saying this is me and I don’t need your approval.

Do you have influences that influenced you to adapt the style you of music you make?

I love Adele. I love how honest and raw she is. It’s definitely something I try to do with my music. It’s really hard sometimes because you are admitting things that can a bit embarrassing or difficult.

Hi, how are you guys?

We’re great! Super excited to get some new music out there

So, how did you come up with the name Secondhand Habit?

The name Secondhand Habit represents how almost all habits both good and bad come from somewhere else and how music is our Secondhand Habit to pass on to the listener

How did the band form?

The band formed in 2010 after Jon’s old band Caddik fell apart, we’ve had many member changes over the years and ended up with the current line up around January of 2016

Do you have anything exciting in the works in the upcoming year?

We’re releasing a new EP called From the Ashes on June 1st and are playing a festival in Port Alberni, BC called the Five Acre Shaker in August that we’re pretty stoked for

How did the idea for ‘Give Me All You Got’ music video come about?

We started out having the idea of filming a house party show for the video then it evolved to incorporate chasing love and finally we decided to add a trickster always stopping us because we like to keep it goofy and make people laugh

Describe your music in one word.

Energetic

Describe yourselves in one word.

Fun-Loving

If you could give any advice to any aspiring musicians out there what would it be?

Music is all about persistence and learning from what worked and what didn’t, people today expect a lot of instant gratification but you’ll never really create anything you’re truly proud of unless you put the time in

What is your definition of culture?

Culture is when a group of people come together to create something that they feel defines them or reflects their current state

5 Types of Accessories To Wear With Your Suit

0

“Style is the perfection of a point of view.” – Richard Eberhart

Accompanying a well fitted suit should be accessories. Accessorising can in fact bring the suit to life, it can show that you like to pay attention to the small details. The suit looks less plain and gives you a more sophisticated look. It can also make you look very confident because you accessorise. Here are some accessories to think about wearing, besides the tie and bow.

1. Cufflinks

It’s such a small piece that you attach to the cuffs of your shirt. These needs a specific shirt that you can attach cufflinks on as most shirts have buttons for fastenings on the cuffs. A good pair of cufflinks shouldn’t go over the top with the design. A simple design would go a long way .

2. Pocket squares

Pocket squares are great for adding design or colour or even both to the suit. There are many ways in which a pocket square can be styled, some are more subtle than others it’s just up to your preferences. However a pocket square does require a top pocket on the suit.

3. A watch

A good watch can complete the look without having to add other accessories. A good watch to wear is something that complements your skin. What is meant by this is that gold watches are better suited for those who have a warm undertone where as silver is best suited for cooler tones. The only reason why specif colours go with different undertones is that it complements the look rather than looking a bit dull.

4. Collar pin / Bar / Clip

Image from: https://www.etonshirts.com/uk/collars

A collar pin or a collar bar is best used on forward pointing collars. A draw back from wearing a collar pin is that if the collar doesn’t have holes you will have to poke a hole through which can damage the shirt unless you don’t particularly mind it. If you do then you can use a collar clip which works int he same way as a collar pin only that it just clips onto the collar. If you would like to use a collar bar it needs a specific shirt with pin holes on the shirt as the bar is very thick and wont go through a normal shirt collar.

5. Lapel Pin

There are many different styles of lapel pins, it can be a form of a badge or it can be a long stem pin. You can have a personalised lapel pin or a floral lapel pin which is mainly used for special occasions.
