Review: Baby Driver (2017)

A thrilling and indulging ride, Baby Driver is a totally original, fun and fast-paced movie.

Baby Driver follows ‘Baby’ (Ansel Elgort) a music-loving getaway driver for kingpin Doc (Kevin Spacey). Baby has worked for Doc for years; even before he could drive. Although the best at his job, Baby wants out and to start a better life. That’s when Debora (Lily James) comes in, a waitress and music lover like Baby who is an escape for him and his life of crime. However, when his life of crime gets in the way of their happiness, Baby faces the music.

It’s safe to say that Edgar Wright is one of the most original, stylish and funniest filmmakers out there. Ever since the hysterical Cornetto trilogy (Hot Fuzz being one of my favourite films ever) and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, no one has come close to what Edgar Wright can and has achieved technically. His visual comedy stands out from all others and Baby Driver is no different.

Let’s start with the music, which in a sense is the main character of this film. Baby is always wearing headphones, listening to the likes of T. Rex, Young MC, Queen and even Egyptian Reggae on his iPod everywhere he goes – especially as he is driving. He uses the music to block out the tinnitus he has had ever since he was involved in an accident at a young age. The music plays as an expressive language to the film and Baby’s character. Wright beautifully uses the beat of the music to choreograph the action scenes. The film features some of the most unique shootouts I have ever seen, as well as fantastic car chase sequences. The impressive editing makes the action scenes exciting and the slower scenes meaningful. The action is superb as well; you’ll always be on the edge of your seat.

The film features an ensemble cast who are all brilliant. Ansel Elgort plays Baby extremely well, giving confidence to the character when driving and portraying great chemistry with whoever he shares the screen with. Lily James plays sweet and innocent Debora, glowing on screen around Baby and offering a calm tone to the film. Jon Hamm as Buddy, Jamie Fox and Bats, Eiza González and Jon Bernthal all portray their characters remarkably. Edgar Wright has really managed to create wonderful characters and cast perfect actors to play them.

Baby Driver is an unpredictable film. Featuring some great music, exciting action, fabulous acting and memorable scenes, Edgar Wright has done it again. I do believe this is up there with his best work. The film is a journey full of twists, speed, turns, violence, love, and bumps that you never want to end.

Interview: Jesus On The Mainline

Exciting and genuine would be just a couple of words used to describe the inspiring Jesus On The Mainline band.

With their latest album ‘The Morning Bell’ released with Ropeadope Records which includes 10 fantastic songs that will not let your ears leave your headphones for days, Andrew and Tim from the band joined us for an interview to talk about their music and culture.

Hi, how are you guys?

Andrew Neesley: Doing great thanks!

Tim Emmerick: I’m well, thanks.

So, how did you guys form?

TE: Andrew founded the band several years ago. He had been working on a project with Chris Vos from The Record Company. He founded Jesus On The Mainline when Chris moved to L.A. I joined the band maybe a year in and started writing with Andrew for the band shortly after.

How did your song “Glass Bones” come about?

TE: As I recall the finger-picked acoustic guitar part was the first concept we had for “Glass Bones.” We had that part for several months and knew it was a keeper, but it took a little while to come into focus. We had a fairly good idea of the sonic pallet for “Glass Bones,” so it was really just a matter of constructing the other sections.

AN: After sitting on the finger-picked guitar part Tim mentioned, we experimented with moving the forms a bar here and a bar there–taking traditional progressions and moving them an odd bar earlier and later to find a different direction. We also tried to shoehorn a lot of stuff into the composition and after trying many different lyrics, chords, and melodies, we found the simpler elements had legs on their own.

What are the challenges of making a song like “Glass Bones”?

AN: Finding a balance was crucial. There are so many inter-locking parts in “Glass Bones”–executing the mix was no small feat. And even before that, writing melodic lines for all players while making sure they complimented each other was tough. I think we accomplished our goals though.

TE: Personally I learned that tempo is critical on that song. If I drag the guitar part the whole band is likely to follow me and it’s just too slow. If it’s too fast I can’t play the guitar part. For the band, I think the main challenge is managing dynamics so that all the sounds are in the right place. And catching the mixed meters.

What are your plans for the rest of 2017?

AN: Our goal lately has been to never cease creating. We want to continue to refine our process, our songwriting, our recordings, our albums, our shows etc.

TE: We’ve got a lot in the works. More music, more shows, more web content. Full steam ahead, baby.

So, describe your music in one word.

AN: fire

and how would you describe yourselves in one word?

TE: family

If you could give any advice to any upcoming musicians what would it be?

AN: I’m asked this often. I always advise: “Be great.”

TE: Always make craft your number one priority. You must have business savvy, but without a truly competitive product there’s really no point trying to figure out how you’re going to “make it.”

That’s very good advice! So for the final question, we ask everyone. What is your definition of culture?

AN: Beauty and understanding.

TE:  Queens, NY.

10 Great Andy Warhol quotes

We selected 10 quotes by the legendary artist Andy Warhol, who was widely known for his contribution to art by being of the leading figures in the pop art movement.

He was one of the most influential artists of his time and has created some of the most well-known art in his time. Warhol was the leading figure in the Pop Art movement and made works surrounding some of the greatest figures in the public eye, such as Marilyn Monroe who sadly died before his silkscreen was fully  finished.

During his career, he was also a filmmaker who made underground films. Avant-Garde Filmmaker Jonas Mekas was one of the main influences for Andy Warhol and was the man who got Andy Warhol inspired to start filmmaking. One of his most notable works was ‘Chelsea Girls’ which was an underground film that became his first commercial success after many short and feature-length films failed to hit the mark.

Here are some quotes that will give you a glimpse into what kind of a persona Andy Warhol was.

“In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.”

“Don’t pay any attention to what they write about you. Just measure it in inches.”

“Art is what you can get away with.”

“An artist is somebody who produces things that people don’t need to have.”

I always like to see if the art across the street is better than mine.”

“As soon as you stop wanting something, you get it.”

“The idea of waiting for something makes it more exciting”

“Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.”

“It’s not what you are that counts, it’s what they think you are.”

“A picture means I know where I was every minute. That’s why I take pictures. It’s a visual diary.”

“The mystery was gone but the amazement was just starting.”

What Gucci is all about this Summer

Gucci is all about …

Print and Embroidery!!

Gathering information from the Spring/Summer 2017 and the Cruise 2017 shows for both menswear and womenswear, I have put put together interesting images of prints and embroideries used on their fashion line. They use three themes for their print and embroidery. One of the key themes are animals especially tigers. Another key theme is floral. A more interesting themes is Donald Duck for menswear. Each outfit, print and embroidery is interesting and you can see why Gucci is the main inspiration for our designs this season.

These are from the Spring/Summer 2017 runway

Animals

As you can see from the prints on the womenswear collection the animal prints are larger in scale. It consists of animals and an insect we tend to see during the spring and summer season. The embroidery on the menswear collection are in a smaller scale and more displaced around the suit, as well as the shoes. The embroidery is of a traditional dragon varying in sizes.

The Tiger

Similarly the embellishments of the tiger are on a much larger scale, almost covering the whole skirt of the dress. The embellishments cover around the back as well. This particular outfit in the menswear collection is much more minimalist with the small embroidery of the tiger. The only aesthetic design of an animal.

Floral

The floral prints and embroidery on both collections cover most if not all the fabric on the outfits. Both also have large embroidery on the garments. The colours do really pop out for the dress. Where as the suit is a little more subdue in comparison. But I love the styling of the outfit.

Plants (Womenswear)

This print is more specific to womenswear. Both images use the coat with the print as a center piece. I love how both outfits are styled, both are just as eye catching as each other only one is eye catching as the colour is vibrant where as the other has a lot of prints and block colours going on.

Donald Duck (Menswear)

I thought this was an interesting theme to use but it is very well executed. The colours and mixtures of embroidery is what made the design really work. It’s more interesting than just Donald Duck on its own. Both use floral and fish designs for embroidery. I do like the variation of sizes and the displacement of the design around the coat and robe.

These are from the Cruise 2017 runway

Dogs

Just as we have seen with all the womenswear collection the designs of the prints and embroideries have been on a large scale. The two dogs pretty much almost covers the front of the jacket. I love the colours that have been used in that outfit. As we can see from the menswear outfit the dogs are smaller and they have been embroidered on a floral print bomber jacket. I think the whole outfit looks fun, which is what the summer is about.

Snake

This is also another key animal that Gucci like to use on garments as well as accessories and shoes like the Ace Embroidered Sneakers which is £640. I like how the snake is in one area on the dress, it’s different from the rest of the outfits in the womenswear collection. I love the accessory in the menswear collection. The whole look is minimalist but it also gives the eye something to pinpoint and look at.

5 stylish men’s shorts to wear for summer

0

We have compiled a list of 5 stylish men’s shorts that you can wear for the summer without looking like you got them out of the wardrobe without any consideration.

For many men, shorts are not something they get excited about buying. However, everyone loves to wear them on a hot summers day. This is a list that will help you combine style and fashion with comfortability for that great look you always wanted.

Chino Shorts

Chino shorts have become a classic amongst men. They do range in colors and style depending on what look you are going for. Navy and beige chinos are likely your safest option to get, especially if you are looking to wear a light coloured t-shirt.

Denim Shorts

Can’t wait to wear jeans again? Why not wear denim shorts to replace them for the summer. Denim shorts are quite popular and have various styles and shapes they come in. Slim fit denim shorts are probably the best call, however, if you feel your figure might not go with them, try out regular fit jean shorts which are perfectly normal and very popular. You can find them in most men clothing stores online and in person so the variety is there.

Suit Shorts

If you are going to quite a formal event but want to get away from wearing trousers, these might be just the thing for you. Suit shorts are normally popular in schools however they don’t have to look like school uniforms. Many great fashion labels have ventured into creating great suit shorts for those more casual classy looks. shorts

Madras shorts

If you are looking to wear something that stands out from the rest the Madras shorts will be perfect for you. They are not too common amongst men however they are growing in popularity. These are great if you are looking to go for something more original from the rest of solid colours.

Prepster Shorts

Want something shorter? If you are going for a bit of a different look than normal these are great. They are shorter than normal shorts so you might get some weird looks from people that don’t know that they are meant to be this way. However, prepster shorts are becoming more and more popular amongst men, and are very comfortable to wear.  Once again these come in all different colours from white to pink, the range is there for you to choose from.

9 Russian films that gained critical acclaim and influenced the world of film

0

We compiled a short list of 9 Russian films that went on to influence filmmakers worldwide and gain great critic acclaim at the time of release.

After checking over hundred plus films we sifted and sifted until we found films that we thought had some range in terms of directors and the time they were made. We tried to mix between art cinema and commercial cinema hopefully concluding with a fairer list. Therefore, we chose from directors such as Tarkovsky, Pudovkin, Einstein to Balabanov and Bondarchuk giving you a mix of films to watch.

Andrei Rublev (1966) – Andrei Tarkovsky

Arguably the biggest film Andrei Tarkovsky directed. This film gained critic acclaim worldwide as it went on to win FIPRESCI Prize at the renowned Cannes film festival. The film showcases the great skill Tarkovsky had at compositing shots and his great sense of poetic movement through editing and camera. The film went onto being ranked No. 87 in Empire magazine’s “The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema” in 2010.

Battleship Potemkin (1925) –  Sergei Eisenstein

This classic Russian film is probably known by every film student and filmmaker worldwide. It is one of the most important films in the editing world as it crafted montage techniques that are still used today and are paid homage to. Eisenstein’s creative genius created a pathway for other filmmakers to take on in their movies. Some of the films that paid homage to Battleship Potemkin are Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The GodfatherBrian De Palma’s ‘The Untouchables‘, and  George Lucas’ ‘Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith‘.

Brother (1997) – Aleksei Balabanov

Some criticised this film for not reaching the potential it had, however, we would disagree. It went on to become a cult film throughout Russia and Russian speaking countries in the late 90’s. According to some sources, the whole film was filmed with a micro budget of around $10,000 to $20,000 with actors getting basically no pay and the filming being done in around 30 days. It also went onto getting screened at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival.

Mirror (1975) – Andrei Tarkovsky

This Tarkovsky classic has countless scenes that have been considered to be the best film scenes ever. Specifically, the burning barn scene as it once again showcased the great talent Tarkovsky had to composite the shots through movement, natural elements, and timing. The beauty of this film is that the plot of the film could be described as non-existent and has been interpreted in many different ways, therefore building the mystery and meaning behind it. It has been part of many lists as one of the greatest films ever made.

Ivan’s Childhood (1962) – Andrei Tarkovsky

This drama set in the WWII became one of the first works to define who Tarkovsky was – a true poet. Ivan’s Childhood showcased the skills Tarkovsky had developed through studying photography and poetry in his earlier life. The film was commercially successful as it sold over 16.7 million tickets in the Soviet Union, becoming one of the most successful Tarkovsky films ever made. It even went on to win the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival in 1962.

The 9th Company (2005) – Fedor Bondarchuk

After many war dramas, Russian cinema has produced, The 9th Company stands the test of time. It became an instant hit in Russia and has gained quite name for itself worldwide. The film follows Russian recruits in the 1980’s Afghanistan fighting psychological and physical battles – which is something that is not shown in many war films nowadays so openly.

Mother (1926) – Vsevolod Pudovkin

By many described as a propaganda film, the key impact it had on the world of editing is enormous. Directed by the legendary Vsevolod Pudovkin. The film follows one woman and her struggle against Tsarist rule during the Russian revolution. Pudovkin was renowned for his editing and this film was a key work that showcased that through montage.

Burnt by the Sun (1994) – Nikita Mikhalkov

Arguably by many considered to be one of the most successful Russian films of all time due to its critic acclaim after it won the Academy Award for the best foreign film in 1994, ‘Burnt by the Sun’ immediately became a Russian classic. It went on to have a sequel with a lot of promise, however, it did not work out as it flopped at the box office.

Ballad of a Soldier (1959) – Grigory Chukhray

Whilst this film did not get nominated for best foreign film at the Academy Awards it did get nominated for best story and screenplay. This film could be argued to be a Ukrainian film as the director and one of the writers were Ukrainian-born. However, was produced by Mosfilms which is a Russian production company and had many Russian actors. The film had great success in the Soviet Union and even went on to win the Lenin Prize in 1961.
