Three of the best: Best Mate’s historic trio of Gold Cup victories

The term legend gets thrown around a lot in the sporting world nowadays, but as far as Best Mate is concerned — he certainly fits the billing. Trained by Henrietta Knight, the bay gelding dominated the steeplechasing category in the early 2000s — winning 14 of his 22 starts, including the King George VI Chase, the Peterborough Chase and the Haldon Gold Cup, all while never falling at a fence and finishing outside of the top two just once!

That by itself is a glittering, impressive CV. However, we have merely scratched the surface of the legend that is Best Mate thus far, because it is his hat-trick of successive Cheltenham Gold Cup victories that truly made him a fan favourite with jump racing fanatics. First winning the Festival’s showpiece event in 2001, ‘Matey’ became the ‘people’s champion’ when he went on to win the Gold Cup three wins on the trot — emulating the same feat as the great Arkle, who won each renewal of the race between 1964 and 1966.

Best Mate unfortunately suffered an on-track heart attack at Exeter in 2005, collapsing after being pulled up by Paul Carberry in the Haldon Gold Cup. But his legacy lives on at Cheltenham Racecourse, as his ashes were buried at the winning post while he also has an enclosure named in his honour at the iconic Prestbury Park. So, with another renewal of the Festival on the horizon and the chance for another horse to write their name in Gold Cup history, let’s take a look back at Best Mate’s three victories in the Blue Riband contest.

2002 Gold Cup

With the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Britain resulting in the 2001 edition of the Festival being cancelled, anticipation was rife for the prestigious Prestbury Park meeting the following year and it was Best Mate who provided the thrills in the Gold Cup — winning from 7/1, much to the joy of those who bet on horses. The then seven-year-old didn’t exactly go into the showpiece race in the best form, finishing second in his previous two outings — including in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day.

But, on his first attempt at the challenging three and quarter-mile trip, Matey prevailed — quickening to take the lead approaching the last and running on well to hold off 25/1 chance Commanche Court, ridden by Ruby Walsh and trained by his father Ted, by almost two lengths to gift Culloty, Knight and owner Jim Lewis their first Gold Cup triumph.

“I’ve always said he was the perfect racehorse so I knew he’d stay three miles plus,” Knight said afterwards. “Jim gave him a super ride, always in the right place. He made a mistake at the same fence twice but otherwise it was a magic round.”

2003 Gold Cup

There were no questions surrounding Best Mate’s form this time around. The Knight-trained horse lined up for starter’s orders at Prestbury Park having already won the Grade 2 Peterborough Chase on his seasonal reappearance in November and he backed that up in the King George one month later — so it was no surprise he went off for the Gold Cup as the short-priced favourite at 13/8.

It was as commanding a race as the betting suggested as well, with Best Mate pulling well clear of Valley Henry, who eventually finished fourth, on the turn for home, opening up a massive lead by the final couple of fences and stretching even further clear up the Cheltenham Hill to beat 33/1 shot Truckers Tavern by a comfortable 10 lengths.

2004 Gold Cup

Best Mate started the season with a defeat in the Peterborough Chase, finishing eight lengths behind Jair Du Cochet, but he bounced back by winning the Ericsson Chase at Leopardstown in Ireland, where he was bred, in December and the bookies were taking absolutely no risks with in the Gold Cup — pricing the now nine-year-old at 8/11, making him the first odds-on favourite for the blue riband race since Arkle went off at 1/10 on his hat-trick attempt in 1966.

It was certainly a more dramatic run than his previous two outings in the Gold Cup, as Best Mate looked trapped in by the leaders on the inside at the final bend. However, Culloty soon switched him right and they led over the final fence — driving home and holding off the very late challenge of Sir Rembrandt to win by nothing more than half a length.

“We said beforehand that the only safe way was down the inside, because down the middle was cut up last year and there was no grass on it,” said Culloty. “We had to take the gamble, and at times I wasn’t getting the best of runs. Everybody was saying it was a steering job, but it was a Gold Cup and there is no quarter given.”

Still Woozy and Remi Wolf Team Up for New Song ‘Pool’

Sven Gamsky (aka Still Woozy) and Remi Wolf have joined forces for a new single called ‘Pool’. Co-produced by Gasky and Wolf, with additional contributions from Jared Solomon (aka Solomonophonic), the track arrives with an accompanying video directed by Haley Appell. Check it out below.

“’Pool’ came together in an afternoon of hanging out with Remi and Jared,” Gamsky explained in a statement. “It was one of the quickest written songs I’ve ever been a part of. Remi and I had been hanging out talking about life all morning, so the content for the song was fresh on our minds as we went to write. She recorded her verse in one take and we knew instantly it was something special.”

“’Pool’ was such a beautifully natural collaboration – and is a great reflection of how life can just so seamlessly turn into art,” Remi Wolf added. “It perfectly showcases mine and Sven’s comfortability with each other and how both of our wildly different skill sets can create something that feels so true to both of us. We went into the writing process with the intention of being 100% honest and specific with where we were both at that day and I love how when I listen to the song it feels like a true time capsule to both of our life situations at the time.”

‘Pool’ marks Still Woozy’s first new music since his 2021 debut LP, If This Isn’t Nice, I Don’t Know What Is. Remi Wolf’s debut album, Juno, also arrived last year.

It’s called ‘Skrting on the Surface’, and it follows previous outings ‘You Will Never Work in Television Again’ and ‘The Smoke’. The track is accompanied by a music video shot in 16mm black-and-white film by BAFTA-winning writer and director Mark Jenkin in the Rosevale Tin Mine in Cornwall, UK. Check it out below.

Muse Announce New Album ‘Will of the People’, Share Video for New Single ‘Compliance’

Muse have announced their next album: Will of the People arrives on August 26 via Warner Records. The album will include the previously shared single ‘Won’t Stand Down’, as well as a new track called ‘Compliance’, which comes with an accompanying video directed by Jeremi Durand and shot in Poland. Check it out below and scroll down for the album’s cover artwork and tracklist.

Will of the People was created in Los Angeles and London and is influenced by the increasing uncertainty and instability in the world,” Matt Bellamy said in a press release. “A pandemic, new wars in Europe, massive protests & riots, an attempted insurrection, Western democracy wavering, rising authoritarianism, wildfires and natural disasters and the destabilization of the global order all informed Will of the People. It has been a worrying and scary time for all of us as the Western empire and the natural world, which have cradled us for so long are genuinely threatened. This album is a personal navigation through those fears and preparation for what comes next.”

Commenting on the new single, he said: “‘Compliance’ is about submission to authoritarian rules and reassuring untruths to be accepted to an in-group. Gangs, governments, demagogues, social media algorithms & religions seduce us during times of vulnerability, creating arbitrary rules and distorted ideas for us to comply with. They sell us comforting myths, telling us only they can explain reality while simultaneously diminishing our freedom, autonomy and independent thought. We are not just coerced, we are herded, frightened and corralled to produce a daily ‘2 minutes of hate’ against an out-group of their choosing and to turn a blind eye to our own internal voice of reason & compassion. They just need our Compliance.”

Muse’s previous album, Simulation Theory, was released in 2018.

Ethel Cain Announces Debut Album ‘Preacher’s Daughter’, Shares New Song ‘Gibson Girl’

Ethel Cain has announced her debut album, Preacher’s Daughter. The follow-up to last year’s Inbred EP is set to arrive on May 12 via Daughters of Cain. Along with the announcement, Cain has today shared a new single called ‘Gibson Girl’. Check it out below.

“Being a woman is about never quite reaching a goal that someone else set for you,” Cain said in a statement about the new track. “Under pressure to fit an impossible standard, I find myself daydreaming about what it would be like to be perfect in a way I can’t ever possibly achieve. I’ve always been in love with Evelyn Nesbit, the Gibson Girl, and thought she was the absolute pinnacle of feminine poise and grace. Whenever I start to lose myself and forget what I’m capable of, I just turn to her and she’s the greatest reminder.”

Ducks Ltd. and illuminati hotties Cover Jesus & Mary Chain’s ‘Head On’

Ducks Ltd. have teamed up with illuminati hotties for a cover of Jesus & Mary Chain’s ‘Head On’. It comes with the announcement of Ducks Ltd.’s new cover series, The Sincerest Form of Flattery, each installment of which will see them collaborating with a different artist. Listen to their take on ‘Head On’ below.

Talking about the track, Ducks Ltd.’s Tom McGreevy said in a statement:

I really like covers! If memory serves the first time we did one as a band was when Evan’s parents came to visit Toronto from Australia and we had a show while they were in town so we learned a song called “Before Too Long” by Australia’s poet laureate Paul Kelly (who for those who don’t know him is sort of like Australia’s Bob Dylan/Bruce Springsteen/Elvis Costello all rolled into one very beloved guy). We’ve kept doing them live, both sincerely (The Go-Between’s “That Way”) and as something of a goof (Tom Petty’s “American Girl”), ever since and every time we do one we feel like we learn something about songwriting and arranging that makes us better at making our own music. This project is kind of an extension of that exercise, and as a band who obviously wear our influences on our sleeve a bit, it’s a fun way to share some stuff we’re into.

The original “Head On” is total a classic. The lyrics are just so brilliant in an understated kind of way, but I actually started thinking about covering it after listening to the Pixies’ cover of it on Trompe le Monde (which is the best Pixies album, don’t @ me). They really kick the shit out of it, in a totally different way than The Jesus and Mary Chain do, and it made me desperate for a chance to sing it, and also got me thinking about ways you could adapt the vibe of it to make it fit into our world a bit. Sarah Tudzin has an immense and powerful production/mixing mind and one of my favourite singing voices of anyone doing stuff right now, so we asked her if she’d be down to work on it with us and she helped us figure out how to make all the pieces fit together. Truly a high honour! She also persuaded us to record our guitars through actual amplifiers for the first time ever, rather than going straight into the box like we normally do which feels momentous! Amplifiers! Who knew!

Ducks Ltd. recently released their one-off single ‘Sheets of Grey’, following their 2021 debut LP Modern Fiction. Check out our Artist Spotlight interview with Ducks Ltd.

C’est Karma Shares New Single ‘Gateaux’

C’est Karma has shared a new single called ‘Gateaux’. It’s taken from her forthcoming Amuse-Bouche EP, which is out May 13 and includes the previously unveiled ‘Bubblegum’. Give it a listen below.

“Gateaux’ is a sign of our times, it’s about the young generations and our future,” Karma Catena explained in a statement. “I wanted to create an opposition between an ideal world and the world we are headed towards if we don’t act upon climate change. I address the children of the future that will be left with the ruins of our present.”

“I wanted the lyrics to be poetical and so the French words came to me naturally being strongly inspired by canonical French poets like Baudelaire and Éluard who address very dark topics in very poetic ways,” she continued. “I am fascinated by the way these authors shape images with words and tried to take this over into my own writing. Having been active in various climate activist youth grousp in my early teens, my frustration towards the political idleness grew over the years. A large part of my generation feels like our future is being jeopardised by those in power, and that’s what ‘Gateaux’ is about.”

Body Type Share Video for New Single ‘Buoyancy’

Australian outfit Body Type have shared a new single called ‘Buyoancy’, the latest offering from their debut album Everything Is Dangerous But Nothing’s Surprising. The track arrives with an accompanying video, which you can check out below.

“‘Buoyancy’ started as a playful text message exchange between Annabel [Blackman] and me,” the band’s Georgia Wilkinson Derums explained in a statement. “In many ways, the song is about grappling with internal inconsistencies and moral ambiguities in an incoherent style. It’s had a few iterations – when I brought it to the group it had more of a slow Big Star spirit. Soph and Annabel made it more angular, more tongue in cheek with the guitar, which further injects the song with distorted meaning. It’s also a personal reminder that when certain things are rendered uncertain those you love are an eternal rudder.”

Body Type’s debut LP is set to land on May 20 via Poison City Records.
