Sustainable And Ethical Fashion: A New Wave Of Conscious Consumerism

Sustainable and ethical fashion minimizes resource depletion and pollution supports fair labour practices and aligns with conscious consumer demands. Consider animal welfare, contribute to a circular economy, and make choices that reflect social responsibility. Ethical fashion is crucial in mitigating climate change, complying with global standards, and positively affecting brand reputation. Discover below how the emergence of sustainable and ethical fashion influences your behavior.

The Environmental Impact of Fast Fashion

Clothing production relies on materials like cotton, water, and synthetic fibers, leading to deforestation, water pollution, and high energy use. Support water-intensive crops with pesticides, causing contamination. Dyeing and finishing processes contribute to water pollution. The “throwaway” culture in fast fashion results in substantial textile waste, including slow-decomposing synthetic fabrics, releasing microplastics and natural fibers, contributing to soil pollution in landfills.

Sustainable Fashion: A Need for Change

You can adopt organic and recycled materials and energy-efficient manufacturing processes. Emphasize durability and timeless design instead of following fleeting trends. Choose high-quality, long-lasting garments that stand the test of time to promote a more responsible approach to consumption.

Sustainable fashion can be further realized by partnering with a print on demand provider who shares your eco-conscious values, ensuring minimal waste in production. By collaborating with a print on demand partner committed to sustainability, you can extend the lifespan of your garments while reducing excess inventory and environmental impact.

The same is true when choosing accessories. Women love crystal necklaces, and men appreciate well-crafted leather goods. Opting for sustainably sourced and ethically produced accessories can further enhance your commitment to an eco-friendly wardrobe. Look for brands prioritising transparency in their supply chain, ensuring fair labor practices and minimal environmental impact.

Ethical Fashion: Prioritizing People and Communities

Address sweatshops, child labour, and unsafe working conditions by promoting fair labour practices. Brands should provide information about their products’ origins and production conditions, fostering a deeper connection between you and the people who make your clothes for a more empathetic and responsible industry.

The Role of Technology in Driving Change

Technology is driving the shift to sustainable and ethical fashion. For instance, lab-grown leather and 3D printing reduce waste, addressing environmental challenges. Blockchain enhances supply chain transparency, allowing you to trace clothing journeys from raw materials to the finished product.

The Rise of Conscious Consumerism

Ethical and sustainable fashion is linked to conscious consumerism, where informed and socially conscious modern consumers like yourself prioritize brands aligned with their values. Invest in products contributing positively to the world, prompting the fashion industry to reassess practices. Sustainable and ethical fashion is now mainstream, reshaping industry priorities and influencing fashion trends.

Here are some effective ways to encourage consumers to be more conscious about their fashion choices:

  1. Support and promote fashion brands with certifications, such as Fair Trade, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), or B Corp certification.
  2. Advocate for circular fashion practices, such as recycling, upcycling, and clothing swaps. Educate consumers on the importance of extending the lifecycle of their clothing and reducing waste.
  3. Encourage a minimalist approach to fashion by promoting quality over quantity. Emphasize the benefits of investing in timeless, durable pieces that can be worn longer.
  4. Promote buying secondhand or vintage clothing to reduce the demand for new production. Highlight the unique and sustainable aspects of pre-loved fashion.
  5. Support local and artisanal fashion brands. Emphasize the value of handmade and locally produced items.
  6. Organize events, workshops, and discussions within communities to raise awareness. Share success stories and inspire collective action.
  7. Advocate for policies that promote sustainable and ethical practices within the fashion industry. Support initiatives that address fair wages, safe working conditions, and environmental regulations.
  8. Collaborate with influencers and celebrities who promote sustainable fashion choices. Their influence can reach a wider audience and create a positive impact.
  9. To reach a broader audience, Foster collaborations between sustainable fashion brands, influencers, and organizations.
  10. Encourage consumers to use their purchasing power to support ethical and sustainable brands. Refrain from patronizing brands with poor practices and voice concerns through social media or other platforms.

Challenges and Opportunities

McKinsey & Company’s report on The State of Fashion 2024 predicts that fashion enterprises will encounter economic challenges, technological transformations, and a shifting competitive environment. By leveraging technology, fashion companies can optimize their supply chain, production processes, and resource management.

Moreover, shifting towards sustainable and ethical fashion faces challenges, including higher costs, but optimism exists for increased affordability with growing demand. Education is crucial, empowering you to make informed choices. The industry must continue innovating and investing in sustainability for a lasting positive impact.

Conclusion

Sustainable and ethical fashion signifies a transformative shift in the industry, fueled by increasing awareness of environmental and social concerns. It goes beyond clothing choices, emphasizing the values supported through your consumer decisions. With the rise of conscious consumerism, the fashion industry is compelled to reevaluate traditional practices for a more sustainable and ethical future.

How To Have A Modern Wedding

Weddings have been taking place for many thousands of years, and that means there are certain traditions that immediately come to mind when you start planning your own. Whether it’s the type of venue you opt for, the outfits, the food, the extras like cake and a photographer, or anything else, your idea of what a wedding ‘should’ be is probably colored by everything that’s gone before.

What if we said you didn’t have to think about anything that anyone else has done, and you could make your wedding as modern as you want – as personal and unique as you want? Would that be exciting?

Of course, some people definitely want to follow tradition and do things the way they’ve always been done, and there’s nothing wrong with that – a traditional wedding can be a wonderful thing, and the couple and their guests will probably have an amazing time. But if you want something a little different, don’t worry; you can modernize your wedding and ensure it’s exactly what you want it to be. With that in mind, here are some ways to have a modern wedding that you’ll love now and when you look back on it in years to come.

Mismatched Wedding Outfits

There are lots of things to think about when you’re planning a wedding, and although everything will seem important, there are clearly going to be some elements that are more important than others, and the wedding outfits – the bride’s dress, the groom’s suit, and the wedding party’s clothing – has to be close to the top of the list of things to put in place.

If you want to make sure you’re having a modern wedding that’s going to be beautiful and unique, one option is not to go with the traditional idea of matching outfits where everyone in the wedding party looks the same, but instead, try mismatched outfits. You can stick with your color theme (which generally makes things easier), but rather than everyone having the same suit or dress, they can choose outfits that suit their body shape and comfort levels. Everyone will enjoy the day much more wearing clothes they actually like, and you’ll have a modern wedding to look back on.

Interesting Wedding Rings

Wedding rings don’t have to be boring bands of gold with no unique features – modern wedding rings can look however you want them to, and, perhaps more interestingly, they can be made of up-to-date and beautiful materials as well.

You could choose a wooden wedding ring, for example, or a black one, or a wedding ring with pieces of meteorite in it, and so on – these days, a modern wedding ring is an exciting purchase, and if you want to wear something you’ll love for many years to come, staying away from the standard gold band and going for something a bit more interesting does make a lot of sense.

Don’t Have Flowers

Traditionally, a bride will hold a bouquet of flowers, and her bridesmaids will have similar bouquets or perhaps baskets of blooms. There will be flowers in the groom’s buttonhole. There will be flowers all over the venue. In other words, in a standard wedding, there will be flowers everywhere you look.

If you don’t like that idea, either because you’re allergic to pollen, you think it’s a waste, or you’re just not into flowers, there’s absolutely no rule whatsoever that says you have to have flowers at your wedding. So don’t do it!

You can choose to have nothing to replace the flowers with, but if you’re looking for a modern touch, there are a few options if you do want to include something else instead. One option is to have greenery rather than flowers (which is better for allergies, for example). Or what about paper flowers? Other ideas include fans, chocolate bars, fruit, candles, feathers, and so on. You can carry whatever you want, within reason, of course, so stop thinking about flowers and start thinking about anything else!

Try A Modern Cake

Cakes are a very traditional element of any wedding, so your first thought might be to do away with the cake altogether – after all, you want to make things modern, so why have something that’s quite old-fashioned?

The answer is that your guests (and quite possibly you!) may well enjoy cake, so it seems a shame to get rid of it if it’s something people want. That’s why, rather than foregoing the cake altogether, you can just make it more modern instead. That could mean a modern design, different ingredients, or perhaps you could have cupcakes, donuts, or churros instead of an actual cake. In that way, people still get a sweet treat, but you’ll have the modern twist that you’re looking for. You could also consider modern luxury NYC wedding cakes, which offer innovative designs and bold flavors. This way, you can keep the cake tradition alive but with a contemporary twist that feels fresh and exciting.

Nina Cobham Unveils New Song ‘effort in’

0

Manchester-based artist Nina Cobham has released a new single, ‘effort in’. Co-produced by Frankie Scoca, the track arrives with an accompanying visual directed by Isaac Oliver Robinson. Check it out below.

“Some songs take me ages to finish because a section doesn’t feel right, so I’ll revisit it with new lyrics until something feels like it fits,” Cobham explained in a statement. “Usually it just falls into place really easily when it’s had some room to breathe!” ‘effort in’, she added, is “about realising you’re asking for bare minimum, and recognising you deserve better. It was an observation that I tend to reciprocate what I receive. It was a moment of, ‘this is going nowhere because it’s a cycle we’re both encouraging, and neither of us even care that much’.”

‘effort in’ will appear on Cobham’s upcoming EP Antes, which arrives February 9 via AWAL.

Album Review: Kali Uchis, ‘Orquídeas’

Kali Uchis knows how to ease us into her albums, ensuring from the very first moments this one’s not going to be any less luxurious or pleasing than the last. Orquídeas, her latest Spanish–language effort, is no exception, but it also catches listeners by surprise. Much like ‘in my Garden…’ from last year’s lavish Red Moon in Venus, opener ‘¿Como Así?’ is graceful, pillowy, and inviting – “If you come around here/ You’ll never wanna leave,” she promises – before taking a turn, a dance beat suddenly pulsing the track forward.  The Colombian American singer has said that while Red Moon in Venus was soulful and down-tempo, Orquídeas is her uptempo album, and those who enjoyed the early singles ‘Muñekita’, featuring Dominican rapper El Alfa and City Girls’ JT, and the Karol G collab ‘Labios Mordidos’, might have expected as much. But it’s not like Uchis just didn’t want to waste time between albums and made Orquídeas in rapid response to Red Moon in Venus, hoping to capitalize on its success and push her sound in a different direction. No – she made those albums at the same time, and this is her simply owning the versatility that made her stand apart in the first place. It deserves just as much praise as its predecessor.

According to Uchis, her first label didn’t give Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) ∞, her previous Spanish-language LP, the proper promotional push. But after the success of ‘Telepatía’, which became her biggest hit yet, there will no doubt be more support behind Uchis’ multi-faceted approach. But Orquídeas, which is named after the national flower of Colombia, also happens to be an overall stronger album than Sin Miedo, bolder and more dynamic in its embrace of different styles. She seeks not just to combine genres but, in her words, “re-define the way we look at Latinas in music,” and her take on traditional Latin styles like bolero and dembow are not only refreshing but integrated as fluidly as the way she switches between English and Spanish – which sounds seamless yet also has a way of punctuating her lyrical shifts and nuances.

Take ‘Te Mata’, which might be the album’s centerpiece – Uchis rarely dwells on the past, but when she briefly touches on it here, bolero is the perfect fit for a moment of dramatic reclamation: “Nunca vas a poder cortar mis alas y eso es lo que te mata,” she sings (“You’ll never be able to cut my wings, and that’s what kills you”). As she flies back on to the ethereal territory of ‘Perdiste’, she looks to a former lover with cold, hard pity (“Did you cry seeing the bed empty?/ Did you fill it up with strangers, trying hard to replace me?”), yet the track is tinged with melancholy acceptance, mirrored by the buzzing rhythm that crashes against its soft, dreamy production. That’s not the space she occupies for most of the album, which is generally more assertive, and yes, upbeat than Red Moon in Venus. But for the most part, it wanders through the same lovelorn daze, which she gets to luxuriate on tracks like the mid-tempo groove of the Peso Pluma duet ‘Igual Que Un Ángel’ and the following ‘Pensamientos Intrusivos’, where intrusive thoughts of love take the form of gorgeous, fluttering harmonies. She can be tender and demanding in the same breath, but will brush aside anyone still skeptical of young – and especially this – love: “What do they know/ They’re miserable, broken, and alone.”

The fierce, thrilling, and downright frenzied energy of reggaeton tracks like ‘Muñekita’ and ‘Labios Mordidos’, then, is not quite representative of the whole album. But it’s part of what makes the record’s final stretch feel so vital and celebratory, largely thanks to the wild interplay between Uchis and her guests, who bring more than enough attitude to their performances to edge her out of her languid, blissful zone, like when Rauw Alejandro hops in on ‘No Hay Ley Parte 2’, a remix of the 2022 single. You can only set the tone for so long before you need to take things to the dance floor, and Orquídeas proves there’s no reason the elements of house and disco that are all over the album shouldn’t tug alongside the merengue rhythms that joyously bring it to a close. That’s because when Kali Uchis sings about love, she’s also singing about her own timeless vision: as she puts it on ‘Young, Rich & in Love’, “No one in the future or from yesterday/ Will be like me, and you know it.”

The Black Keys have announced a new album called Ohio Players. It’s set to arrive on April 5 via Nonesuch/Warner, and today, the band has previewed it with the new single ‘Beautiful People (Stay High)’. Check it out below.

Ohio Players marks the Black Keys’ first LP since 2022’s Dropout Boogie. “We’d never worked harder to make a record,” Dan Auerbach said of the album in a statement. “It’s never taken us this long to make an album. We took our time and did it right.”

“What we wanted to accomplish with this record was make something that was fun,” Patrick Carney added. “And something that most bands 20 years into their career don’t make, which is an approachable, fun record that is also cool.”

Albums Out Today: Kali Uchis, 21 Savage, Kid Cudi, Marika Hackman, and More

In this segment, we showcase the most notable albums out each week. Here are the albums out on January 12, 2024:

Kali Uchis, Orquídeas

Kali Uchis is back with Orquídeas, her second Spanish-language album and fourth LP overall. Following 2020’s Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) ∞ and last year’s Red Moon in Venus, the record includes the previously released singles ‘Muñekita’ featuring El Alfa and JT, ‘Te Mata’, and the Karol G-assisted ‘Labios Mordidos’. “The orchid is the national flower of Colombia, and we have more species of orchid than anywhere on earth,” Uchis said in press materials. “I always felt distinctly intrigued and magnetized by the flower. This album is inspired by the timeless, eerie, mystic, striking, graceful and sensual allure of the orchid. With this vast scope of fresh energy, I wish to re-define the way we look at Latinas in music.”

21 Savage, american dream

american dream, 21 Savage’s first solo studio album in six years, has arrived. Serving as the soundtrack to his debut film of the same name, the 15-track LP boasts collaborations with Young Thug, Brent Faiyaz, Doja Cat, Summer Walker, Travis Scott, Lil Durk, Burna Boy, and more. Earlier this week, the rapper shared a trailer for the biographical film American Dream: The 21 Savage Story, which stars Donald Glover and Stranger Things‘ Caleb McLaughlin.

Kid Cudi, Insano

Kid Cudi has dropped his much-anticipated new album, Insano. Following his 2022 effort Entergalactic, the record spans 21 tracks – including the already released ‘Porsche Topless” and ‘At the Party’ – and clocks in at just over an hour. It features guest appearances from DJ Drama, Travis Scott, ASAP Rocky, Lil Yachty, Young Thug, Lil Wayne, XXXTentacio, and Pharrell Williams, as well as production from Take a Day Trip, Dot da Genius, WondaGurl, BNYX, Clams Casino, Keyon Christ, Da Honorable C.N.O.T.E., and more. The album’s cover art is a collaboration with artist and designer KAWS.

Marika Hackman, Big Sigh

Marika Hackman has released her fourth album, Big Sigh, via Chrysalis Records. The London singer-songwriter produced the follow-up to 2019’s Any Human Friend with Sam Petts-Davies and longtime collaborator Charlie Andrew. “I’d always produced on my records, but I’d never backed myself enough to actually say that I had,” Hackman said in a statement. “I liked being a sponge and I saw the first two thirds of my career as a learning experience – I would sit back in a slightly deferential position to allow the dynamic to work. With this album I got to a point where I realised I’d done the learning, I knew what to do.” It was preceded by the singles ‘No Caffeine’‘Hanging’, ‘Slime’, and ‘The Yellow Mile’. Read our review of Big Sigh.

Nailah Hunter, Lovegaze

Lovegaze is the debut full-length by Los Angeles-based harpist and multi-instrumentalist Nailah Hunter. Out now via Fat Possum, the record was previewed by the singles ‘Finding Mirrors’, Strange Delights’, and ‘Bleed’. “I think for a lot of people who play harp and do something else, they can very easily hide behind the harp and hide behind what people think your intention is with the instrument,” Hunter said in our Artist Spotlight interview. “As scary as it is, because it was, I’m really proud of myself for not hiding behind the harp with Lovegaze. I think it’s beautifully integrated throughout the album, I would still say it’s a harp-centric album, but it feels like the harp is asking the questions versus being the answer to the questions, in a way.”

Infant Island, Obsidian Wreath

Fredericksburg, VA screamo band Infant Island have dropped a new album titled Obsidian Wreath. The follow-up to 2020’s Beneath was produced by Matthew Michel and features guest vocals from Greet Death members Harper Boyhtari and Logan Gaval (‘Kindling’) and .gif from god’s Andrew Schwartz (‘Another Cycle’), as well as contributions from members of Undeath, King Yosef, For Your Health, Senza, Malevich, Mikau, and more.

Other albums out today:

0

Sheryl Crow has shared the title track from her upcoming album Evolution, which arrives on March 29. The song was produced by Mike Elizondo and features a guitar solo by Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello. Listen to it below.

“I wrote the song with just me on guitar and vocals, sent it to my producer, Mike Elizondo and said, ‘this is bigger than me, can you take a crack at it?’” Crow said in a press release. “To me, Tom’s playing comes from some other planet. It’s a cool bit of kismet that we were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the same year, and his solo on ‘Evolution’ just ejects you into space.”
