Future Teens Announce New Album ‘Self Help’, Share Video for New Single ‘BYOB’

Boston-based emo quartet Future Teens have announced their third full-length album: Self Help will be out on September 23 via Triple Crown Records. Lead single ‘BYOB’ arrives with a music video directed by frequent collaborator Michael Herrick. Check it out and find the album cover and tracklist below.

“We’ve all learned the hard way that the best (and sometimes only) way to help ourselves is to ask for help from others,” vocalist/guitarist Amy Hoffman said in a statement. “We didn’t set out to write a record about that, Daniel [Radin] and I just happened to bring each other ideas with overlapping themes about mental health and struggling to get better – sometimes it’s like we have the same brain, even with such different lived experiences.”

“It took me a long time to understand that I needed to stop drinking, longer still to learn I couldn’t do it on my own,” they added of the new track. “‘BYOB’ came together over the first few months of my sobriety, starting when I thought I ‘just needed some time off’ and ending when I realized if I wanted anything to actually get better, I had to keep trying.”

The follow-up to Future Teens’ 2019 record Breakup Season was recorded with longtime collaborator and producer Andy D. Park (Death Cab for Cutie, Pedro the Lion, Now Now). “Making Self Help with all four of us playing together live was the most hectic, fun, exhausting ten days, made all the better by our producer and friend Andy Park,” Hoffman commented. “His ability to turn our most esoteric ideas into something cooler than we had imagined is nothing short of magic.”

In support of the LP, the band will embark on a fall US tour with Camp Trash and Rat Tally. Find those dates below, too.

Listen to Charli XCX’s New Song ‘Hot Girl (Bodies Bodies Bodies)’

Charli XCX has shared a new song, ‘Hot Girl’, which was written with the 1975’s George Daniel for the upcoming A24 murder mystery film Bodies Bodies Bodies. Give it a listen below.

‘Hot Girl’ was previewed in the trailer for Bodies Bodies Bodies, which was unveiled back in April. The Halina Reijn-directed film stars Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Myha’la Herrold, Chase Sui Wonders, Rachel Sennot, Lee Pace, and Pete Davidson. Its official synopsis reads: “When a group of rich 20-somethings plan a hurricane party at a remote family mansion, a party game goes awry in this fresh and funny look at backstabbing, fake friends, and one party gone very, very wrong.”

Charli XCX recently teamed up with Tiësto for a new single called ‘Hot in It’. Her most recent album, CRASH, arrived in March. She’s currently on an extensive tour in support of the album, which included a stop at Primavera Sound.

Living Hour Share Video for New Single ‘Miss Miss Miss’

Living Hour have shared a new single in the buildup to their upcoming full-length Someday Is Today. ‘Miss Miss Miss’ follows the previously released Jay Som collaboration ‘Feelings Meetings’ and arrives with a video directed and animated by Rebekah Hepner. Check it out below.

The new song is about “growing up in Winnipeg and continuing to live in the same town as a budding adult,” the band’s Sam Sarty explained in a statement. “My whole life I’ve driven, biked, bussed, gotten rides up and down Portage Avenue time and time again. In so many different headspaces and seasons of my life I’ve passed the same neon horse sign of the Palomino Club. This song is a celebration of the horse, constantly climbing higher, up and away from Portage Ave., my secret symbol of hope, a beauty to behold. Then, one day, the Palomino Club and the horse were gone. I miss I miss I miss seeing my roadside Queen.”

Hepner added: “To me ‘Miss Miss Miss’ is a song of reminiscence and a longing for the past – a sentiment that is not only present in the narrative of this music video but that I hope is also felt through the visual style. These themes made the entire process very nostalgic for me.”

Someday Is Today is due out September 2 via Next Door Records.

Khruangbin and Vieux Farka Touré Announce New Album ‘Ali’, Share New Song ‘Savanne’

Khruangbin have announced a new collaborative album with Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré, honouring Vieux’s late father, the veteran bluesman Ali Farka Touré. Ali will be released via Dead Oceans on September 23, the day after Republic Day, the holiday commemorating the independence of the Republic of Mali from the Mali Federation. The album’s lead single, ‘Savanne’, is out today, and you can listen to it below.

According to a press release, the LP pays tribute to Ali by “recreating some of his most resonant work and experimenting with different sounds while maintaining the original’s integrity.” Vieux said of the collaboration in a statement: “I want this album to convey love. It is about the love that Ali brought into the world. It is about the love that I have for him and that Khruangbin has for his music. It is about pouring your love into something old to make it new again.”

Khruangbin added: “We made this album to honor Ali’s life and body of work. We hope this collaboration enlightens more people to Ali’s musical legacy.”

Wild Pink Announce New Album ‘ILYSM’, Share New Song

Wild Pink have announced their next album: ILYSM arrives on October 14 via Royal Mountain. Frontman John Ross, Justin Pizzoferrato, and the Antlers’ Peter Silberman co-produced the LP, which features contributions from Julien Baker, Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis, Ryley Walker, Yasmin Williams, and Bing & Ruth’s David Moore and Jeremy Viner. Wild Pink have also shared the album’s title track, which you can check out below, along with the album cover, tracklist, and the band’s upcoming tour dates.

Early in the writing process of ILYSM, which follows 2021’s A Billion Little Lights, Ross was diagnosed with cancer. “Even though I’d already started working on the record, everything took on new meaning after my diagnosis,” Ross, who is now in recovery, said in a statement. “I started writing songs that tried to make sense of the whole experience, including the love and support I felt from the people in my life—particularly my wife, which is where the title came from.”

“This song, like a few others on this record, takes place where I live and the field next to it,” Ross added of ‘ILYSM’. “A full moon will light up all the rooms here in a way I’ve never really seen and I feel like this song wrote itself a little bit. This album is about love in its many forms and this song in particular is a metaphor for love and obsession.”

The title song comes with a visual created by John Smith using the new Dall-E 2 AI system. “These animations were created using machine learning, specifically with the new, much-buzzed about Dall-E-2 model,” Smith explained. “The imagery of the specific clips were directly inspired by different lyrical lines or references, then edited together to make an experimental animation – perhaps one of the first animations using this new model. Early in the pandemic I started a deep dive learning about how I could use and utilize machine learning in my creative practice, and I found that it can be a very exciting and expressive tool for image making.”

11 Ways Music and SFX Can Improve Your Next Film Project

When you’re putting together a film project, the quality of your audio is just as important as the quality of your visuals. Good audio can heighten even a bad film, but bad audio can certainly ruin an otherwise great film. That’s why it’s important to use high-quality sound effects and royalty-free music in your projects. In this article, we’ll discuss several ways that SFX and royalty-free music can improve the quality of your next film project. Let’s get started!

SFX and royalty-free music can make your film more professional looking.

If you’re working on a project with a low budget, quality sound effects and music can help to make it look more professional. By using high-quality SFX and music, you can give your film the same production values as a big-budget Hollywood movie but likely on a smaller scale. This will make your film more enjoyable for audiences and help it to stand out from other low-budget films.

SFX and music can make your film more exciting.

Whether you’re working on an action-packed film or something on the quieter side, SFX and music are essential in making it exciting for audiences. By adding in SFX that match the visuals, you can create a more immersive experience for viewers that will keep them engaged throughout the film. And by using music to heighten the emotion of a scene, you can make audiences feel more invested in what’s going on.

Royalty-free music can help set the tone for your film.

If you want your film to have a certain feeling or atmosphere, the music you choose can play a big role in that. A royalty-free song is perfect for setting the tone of your film because it’s designed to be used in projects just like yours. You won’t have to worry about copyright issues either, and you’ll be able to find a piece of music that perfectly fits the mood you’re going for.

Music can help to translate a character’s thoughts or give additional meaning to their actions.

In many cases, a character’s thoughts or feelings can be conveyed more effectively through music than through dialogue. If you want to show what a character is thinking or feeling without them having to say it outright, adding in some appropriate music can be a great way to do that. Royalty free music can also help to give additional meaning to a character’s actions. For example, if a character is doing something that’s out of the ordinary, adding in some suspenseful music can make it clear to audiences that there’s more going on than meets the eye.

SFX and music can help to establish a sense of place.

If you’re making a film set in a specific location, sound effects and music can be used to establish that sense of place for audiences. By adding SFX that are specific to the location, you can make it feel more real for viewers. And by using music that’s typical of the area, you can also give audiences a better sense of what the film’s setting is like.

Music can reinforce and foreshadow narrative developments.

In addition to setting the tone, music can also be used to reinforce or foreshadow narrative developments. For example, if a character is about to face a difficult situation, using tense music in the scene beforehand can increase the suspense for viewers. Or, if you want to remind audiences of a particular plot point, using music that was introduced earlier in the film can be a subtle way to do that.

SFX can help to make your film more realistic.

If you’re making a documentary or a film set in a realistic environment, SFX can be a great way to add realism and immersion. By using SFX, you can make it feel like the viewer is right there in the middle of the action. SFX can also be used to add tension and suspense, which can be perfect for certain types of films.

Royalty-free music can add emotion and depth to your scenes.

The right piece of music can add a lot of emotion and depth to your scene. According to Psychology Today, music has the ability to evoke powerful emotional responses. It can make a happy scene even happier or a sad scene even sadder. Music is a powerful tool that should be used judiciously in order to get the most out of it. Your music choices have the power to evoke emotions from your audience that they didn’t even know they had.

SFX can help to cover up any imperfections in your audio.

No film is perfect, and that includes the audio. Even with the best equipment and recordings, there will always be some imperfections. SFX can help to cover up these imperfections and make your audio sound smoother and more polished.

Royalty-free music can make your film more memorable.

A great piece of music can make your film more memorable. It can be the one thing that people remember long after they’ve seen the film. If you want your film to be remembered, choose a catchy and memorable piece of music to accompany it. You’ll also want to pay close attention to the music you choose for your intro and ending, as these respectively prepare your audience for what they’re about to see and leave them with a final, lasting impression.

SFX can help to make your film more unique.

With SFX, you can really make your film stand out from the rest. By adding your own personal touch with SFX, you can create a film that is truly unique and unlike any other. This can be a great way to really grab people’s attention and make your film memorable. Your sound design can be as unique as you want it to be. Make your effects interesting to the ear without distracting from the overall scene.

The Bottom Line

When used correctly, SFX and royalty-free music can really improve the quality of your film. By setting the tone, adding realism, emotion, and depth, and making your film more memorable, you can create a film that is truly great. So don’t overlook the importance of audio in your next film project, and be sure to use SFX and music to your advantage. Resources like Soundstripe and Epidemic Sound are great places to start for stock music, and they give you unlimited access to all the music you need for that perfect song or perfect sound. The right use of these can truly make a difference. With a little planning and thought, you can really take your film to the next level.

Plains (Waxahatchee and Jess Williamson) Announce Debut Album, Share New Song ‘Problem With It’

Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield and Jess Williamson have announced a new collaborative album, I Walked With You A Ways, under the name Plains. It’s slated for release on October 14 via ANTI-. The pair have also shared the record’s first single, ‘Problem With It’. Check it out below, and scroll down for the album cover, tracklist, and Plains’ upcoming tour dates.

The pair wrote the new album between Kansas City, Los Angeles, and Marfa. It was recorded in Durham, NC with producer Brad Cook, who also produced Waxahatchee’s Saint Cloud and Great Thunder EP, and a band that featured Spencer Tweedy and Phil Cook.

“I’m thrilled to announce this new project and album,” Crutchfield said in a press release. “I’ve felt a connection to Jess’s songwriting and a kinship with her since we met years ago. Getting to lean into the influence of the music we both grew up with while also making something that feels very current and fresh to me was a great experience and I’m so happy to finally share it.”

Williamson added: “Making this record with Katie was a deeply expansive experience for me as a songwriter. I really trust her ear and sensibilities, and she encouraged me to explore aspects of my songwriting that in the past I’ve shied away from. Katie’s support was so important for me as we wrote this album. We gave ourselves permission to lean into the music that raised us and write the kind of classic timeless songs that we both grew up singing along to. For me that was The Chicks and Dolly Parton, and having a place to channel those influences was an absolute blast. My hope with Plains was to tap into something Universal. I love the album we made, and I’m so excited to play it live.”

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs Shares Video for New Song ‘Never Seen You Dance’

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs has dropped another single in the buildup to his new LP When the Lights Go. Following ‘Forever’, ‘The Sleeper’, ‘Crosswalk’, and ‘Blood in the Snow’, ‘Never Seen You Dance’ arrives with a music video directed by Pavel Brenner. Watch and listen below.

“We wanted to create a feeling of hanging out with friends on a hot summer day,” Brenner explained in a statement. “Our main challenge was to make a transition from a relatively slow opening to two people dancing fluid and not forced. Our creatives are based on the song’s main premise – engaging one’s friend/lover to dance.”

Orlando Higginbottom commented: “I started working on this song a long time ago, there have been so many versions before this final recording. Pavel’s direction and the performances from Zen Waterford and Sophia Frilot brought so much life to the music, it was almost like I’d never heard it before. I love it.”

When the Lights Go is due out September 9 via Nice Age.

Kynsy Announces New EP ‘Something to Do With Love’, Releases New Song

Kynsy has announced her new EP, Something to Do With Love, with the new single ‘Love of Your Life’. The five-track EP, out September 14, includes the recently unveiled tracks ‘New Year’ and ‘Point of You’. It was co-produced with alt-J collaborator Charlie Andrew. Check out ‘Love of Your Life’ below.

“’Love of your Life’ is an expression of that feeling and thought process you go through when you first meet someone you really like,” Kynsy explained in a statement. “When you’re in the early stages of infatuation with them and you fantasise over what the two of you could possibly become in the future.”

Kynsy released her debut EP, Things That Don’t Exist, last year. “Last time, I wasn’t brave enough to make it sound a bit rough at times,” she added. “I want to keep the rawness. It’s about emotion and the feeling of the music, as opposed to trying to say something really deep.”
